Abstract: A subject identification device includes: an illuminator configured to generate illumination light including components at a plurality of wavelength bands, each of the components having a characteristic in accordance with a respective one of settings; an imager configured to generate an image signal by capturing light from a subject under the illumination light having the illumination characteristic; and a processor including hardware. The processor is configured to: define an illumination characteristic of the illumination light; analyze the image signal to acquire spectral information of the subject; and cross check the spectral information of the subject with subject identification information in order to identify the subject. When the subject is not identified, the processor is configured to define another illumination characteristic that causes spectral information of potentials for the subject to be identified, and subsequently each of the imager and the processor performs a process.

Abstract: Provided is an optical apparatus using reflection geometry. The incident beam is obliquely incident on the object off an optical center axis of the lens element, without passing through the optical center axis. The scattered light is transmitted to the photodetector by passing through the optical center axis of the focusing lens element and a region therearound.

Abstract: A medical system comprising a hand-held imaging device comprising optical components including a light source to illuminate an area of medical interest, a liquid crystal variable retarder to receive light from the area of medical interest, and a retardance controller to provide a driving waveform to the variable retarder that controls retardance. The device also includes an image sensor configured to receive light from the variable retarder and to convert the received light into an output voltage signal for either the camera operation or the hyperspectral imaging operation, and communication circuitry configured to communicate imaging information based on the output voltage signal to a medical diagnostic system. The hand-held imaging device is configured to switchably perform a hyperspectral imaging and a camera operation such that the operations share at least one optical component. The diagnostic device is configured to receive the imaging information and to provide diagnostic information based thereon.

Abstract: A measurement system comprises a pulsed laser diode array that includes one or more Bragg reflectors, and wherein the light generated by the array penetrates tissue comprising skin. At least some of the wavelengths of light are in the near infrared. The detection system is synchronized to the laser diode array and comprises an infrared camera and a first receiver comprising a plurality of detectors. The first receiver comprises one or more detector arrays and performs a time-of-flight measurement. The measurement system generates an image, the detection system non-invasively measures blood in blood vessels within or below a dermis layer within the skin based at least in part on near-infrared diffuse reflection from the skin, and the detection system measures absorption of hemoglobin between 700 and 1300 nanometers wavelength range. A processor compares the absorption of hemoglobin between different tissue spatial locations, and the measurement system processes the time-of-flight measurement.
