A method for manufacturing a composite material comprises the steps of furnishing a layer of a matrix material, forming a groove in the matrix-material layer using a laser to remove material from the layer of matrix material in the form of a groove, and placing a reinforcement into the groove. Preferably, the surface of the layer of matrix material is smoothed with a laser beam prior to formation of the groove. In most instances, more than one layer is desired, and the steps of furnishing, forming, and placing are repeated, using the same or different materials, to build up a multilayer composite material. Cylindrical, flat, or curved panel composite materials can be readily prepared, using metal, intermetallic, or ceramic materials for the matrix.

Concrete building panels include a decorative embossed pattern on an outer surface. A plurality of concrete reinforcing ribs are disposed along an inner surface of the concrete building panels. Nailing strips are anchored into tips of the respective concrete reinforcing ribs. A method for making the building panels include a step of placing anchored nailing strips into tapered rib sections of a horizontal fiberglass mold is disclosed wherein reinforcing bars and mesh and moist concrete are placed into the mold and allowed to cure until the exposed upper surface of the moist concrete is plastically deformable. The horizontal mold is passed beneath a rotating embossing roller having a cylindrical embossing pattern thereon. The plastically deformable concrete contacts the embossing pattern, producing a complementary pattern on the concrete surface. The embossed concrete is cured in the mold to produce the building panel. The concrete building panel is then separated from the mold.

The invention relates to cementitious building board, such as gypsum board, having reinforcing strips along one or more of its edges. Such strips can be incorporated in such board faced with paper or other sheet material by cutting back the core leaving the edges of the sheets projecting, applying the strip and returning the edges of the sheets, to be adhesively secured to the face of the strip. The edge may have any desired profile but of particular interest is a board or tile having a groove, or kerf along at least two opposite edges of the core, the reinforcing strips being corresponding channel sections with lateral flanges to which the edges of the facing sheets are secured. The reinforced boards are useful in the production of ceilings and walls and, in the case of panels and tiles with kerfed edges, can be mounted by invisible or ''''secret'''' fixing devices.
