摘要: An optical fiber splicing device (20) includes a glass cylindrically shaped capillary tube member (24) having a passageway formed therethrough eccentrically of the longitudinal axis of the capillary tube member. The capillary tube member is provided with a slot (86) such that a portion of the passageway in the form of a groove (88) extends across a planar surface (87) formed by the slot. The capillary tube member is mounted in a housing (22) which is made of a material and formed to provide a lens opposite to the slot to facilitate visual inspection of ends of end portions of two optical fibers which are positioned in the groove. A spring clamp (26) is mounted to the housing in a first position spaced from the planar surface to allow insertion of fiber end portions into the groove. The clamp is moveable to a second position where it is secured to the housing in a position which causes a portion of the clamp to engage the fiber end portions along at least a portion of the planar surface to hold the fiber end portions in secured alignment with each other.

摘要: The present invention is directed to a device and method for precise positioning, or alignment of two or more articles with respect to each other. The device comprises a Unistructural Mass of Inherent Memory Polymer with two or more internal cavities which have inherent shapes with at least one cross-sectional configuration which is congruent to a cross-sectional configuration shape of the said article(s) in the positioned or aligned position(s). The unistructural mass cavities have cross-sectional configurations which are the same or smaller than those corresponding to the positions of the articles. The unistructural mass also includes at least one separate access cavity. It is deformed such that the articles can be readily inserted into the corresponding cavities. Once the articles are inserted into their corresponding cavities, the inherent memory polymer is returned to its inherent shape by non-mechanical stimulus to force the articles into precisely defined position and inspectional or operational access to the article(s) at or near the alignment portions is available through the separate access hole.

摘要: An interconnect system for ribbon-joined optical fibers includes two connectors (1, 2) integrally attached to the ends of respective optical fiber ribbons (3, 4), in which each connector (1, 2) consists of a pair of coupled metal plates (5) rigidly fastened to each other, between which two or more optical fibers (7) belonging to a ribbon (3, 4) made of parallel optical fibers as well as alignment plugs (10) are clamped. At least a plate (5) in each connector (1, 2) includes an element made of metallic material in which several housing grooves (6, 9) for the optical fibers (7) of the ribbon (3, 4) and for the alignment plugs (10) are formed by cold plastic deformation using the same punch for all the plates belonging to one series. The method of accomplishing the invention includes making several grooved plates (5) by plastic deformation using a single punch; coupling a grooved plate (5) to a second plate and interposing therebetween the optical fibers (7) which are part of an optical fiber ribbon (3, 4) and on a length of which the common covering has been removed, partially housing the fibers (7) in the respective grooves (6); inserting a metered amount of hardening adhesive between the plates (5) clamped against the fibers (7); grinding the end surface of the plates (5) from which the fibers (7) issue; and introducing at least an alignment plug (10) into a respective groove (9).

摘要: An end portion of an elongate member of generally cylindrical form, such as an optical fiber, is placed in a predetermined position utilizing a substrate having a surface that is defined by a generatrix that is a straight line, e.g. a flat surface. A foil of flexible material is secured to the surface of the substrate and defines with the substrate a generally straight, elongate passageway that is parallel to the generatrix of the surface and has a first portion of substantially uniform cross-section adapted to receive an end of the elongate member in closely fitting relationship and also has a second portion that tapers towards the first portion. The end portion of the elongate member is inserted into the first portion of the passageway by way of the second portion thereof.

摘要: Methods and apparatus for passing laser light into an optical fiber having a light input face thereacross, focus the laser light onto a front focus plane of focusing means for forming a spatial spectrum of light distribution in which noise frequencies are spatially distributed about a central spot of light. The position of the light input face of the fiber is coarsely adjusted relative to the focus plane for capturing with the fiber the central spot of light to the exclusion of distributed noise frequencies. The central spot of light is finely adjusted in position on the light input face of the fiber by tilting the focusing means and the light input face of the fiber until a maximum of light energy from the central spot is transmitted through the input face and the fiber. The latter tilting preferably is effected relative to a rear focal plane of the focusing means or about a pivot in such rear focal plane.

摘要: An optical waveguide coupler having intersecting deep and shallow grooves in a planar solid substrate, in which the deep groove accommodates an alignment fiber for fine vertical alignment of an optical fiber with another optical fiber or with an optical component such as a switch, modulator, multiplexer or source of light. The shallow groove accommodates the optical fiber. The alignment fiber may be tapered or have any configuration such that its manipulation causes the alignment fiber to contact the underside of the optical fiber for raising or lowering the optical fiber. There may be a plurality of shallow and deep grooves for coupling more than one optical fiber.
