A method for producing a profiled part from a blank, wherein the cross-sectional profile of the part to be produced differs in some portions both quantitatively and qualitatively from the cross-sectional profile of the blank, so that different amounts of material must be removed between a starting profile of the blank and a desired final profile of the part includes pre-shaping and finish-grinding the part to be produced in one chucking position with at least one profiled grinding wheel. The blank is translated and rotated relative to the at least one profiled grinding wheel during the pre-shaping step for giving the blank approximately a desired profile. The finish-grinding step is performed at least partially after the pre-shaping step for smoothing surfaces and producing the final profile to accurate dimensions. A turbomachine blade, an intermediate product for the turbomachine blade and a method of manufacturing the interim product are also provided.

A grinding machine is particularly adapted to produce blades and buckets of the kind used in turbines and other objects having complex curved surfaces. Data blocks representing the surface of the object to be created are stored in a computer that controls the machine to finish a rough blank into the final object. An abrasive belt passes over a nose roller to make a line contact with the workpiece. The belt and the workpiece are subject to six computer-controlled degrees of freedom: three in translation and three in rotation. The supporting arm of the nose roller can be moved angularly about the belt contact point while the nose roller can be adjusted about a perpendicular axis through the contact point of the belt. Feedback controls indicate the position of and the motion velocity about the six axes. A positional feedback indicates the precise position of the workpiece at the finishing point to permit automatic compensation for belt wear.

A workpiece W to be machined by a rotating cutting tool 32 is carried by a rotary workhead 22 which is in turn mounted on a rotary table 16 for movement relative thereto both rotationally about a first axis perpendicular to the rotation axis of the table 16 and rectilinearly along second and third mutually perpendicular axes. The plane of interpolation between the second and third axes lies perpendicularly to the first axis, irrespective of the angular setting of the table 16. Using a combination of movements, the machine tool is able to produce on the workpiece W an arcuate surface whose radius of curvature is different from the distance of that surface from the workhead rotation axis.

An apparatus for honing workpieces such as the midspans of jet aircraft engine blades is provided. The apparatus includes a flexibly mounted honing stone which will seat itself on the flat surface of the workpiece to be treated. To provide the necessary flexibility, the honing stone is mounted to a support in such a manner that it is pivotable about at least two axes. It may also be moved in a direction which is substantially orthogonal to the two axes. This latter feature allows the stone to move downwardly as the surface of the work piece is honed. It also allows the honing stone to be moved entirely off the work piece and into a storage position. The apparatus further includes a support which is specifically designed for holding an aircraft blade in a position such that the wear surfaces of the midspans of such blades are in a substantially horizontal plane. Two clamping assemblies are provided for clamping the root and one of the midspans of a blade.

An improved method and apparatus for manufacturing finished turbine blades from a raw workpiece is disclosed wherein the path of a sanding shoe with respect to the workpiece is controlled as the workpiece is rotated on a spindle. The method involves plotting the profiles of the turbine blade in a number of planes, defining the profiles as a series of circle segments each having a center and an angular length, choosing an arbitrary center of rotation of the workpiece, measuring the distances from the center of rotation to each of the circle segment centers, plotting the hypothetical path of the center of rotation about each circle segment center by each corresponding angular length, and using the derived path of the center of rotation to control the movement of the shoe in a vertical direction and the workpiece in a horizontal direction as the workpiece rotates. The apparatus includes spindle means for rotating the workpiece about the center of rotation, and means for rotating the shoe axis about vertical and horizontal axes.

A grinding machine in which a workpiece, to have grinding operations carried out at different locations along the workpiece at different radii and at different angles, is mounted between centers on a slideway to present the locations on the workpiece to a motor driven grinding wheel mounted in a grinding head. The grinding head is mounted on a slideway to traverse the grinding wheel towards and away from the periphery of the workpiece. The grinding wheel is mounted on the slide for rotational adjustment about an axis extending tangential to the periphery of the grinding wheel at a location where the grinding wheel acts on the workpiece for adjustment of the angle of cut of the grinding wheel. Since the grinding wheel turns about an axis when its angle is adjusted, the position of an angle of cut is not otherwise varied by the angular adjustment of the grinding wheel. A control mechanism is provided for enabling the grinding wheel to be accurately preset to a number of predetermined angles to suit the workpiece to be ground. The grinding wheel head includes a dresser unit for dressing the grinding wheel and a mechanism for moving the dressing unit into engagement with the grinding wheel to dress the wheel and for restoring the grinding wheel with compensation for the amount of material removed by the dresser unit from the periphery of the grinding wheel.

The invention relates to a grinding machine in which a workpiece such as a multi-stage compressor or turbine rotor to have grinding operations carried out at different locations along the workpiece at different radii and at different angles is mounted between sensors on a slideway to present the locations on the workpiece to be ground to a motor driven grinding wheel mounted in a grinding head. The grinding head is mounted on a slideway to traverse the grinding wheel towards and away from the periphery of the workpiece at a location where the grinding operation is to be carried out and the grinding wheel is mounted on the slide for rotational adjustment about an axis extending tangentially to the periphery of the grinding wheel at a location where the grinding wheel acts on the workpiece for adjustment of the angle of cut of the grinding wheel. Since the grinding wheel turns about the axis when its angle is adjusted, the position of the angle of cut is not otherwise varied by the angular adjustment of the grinding wheel. A control mechanism is provided for enabling the grinding wheel to be accurately pre-set to a number of pre-determined angles to suit the workpiece to be ground. The grinding wheel head includes a dresser unit for dressing the grinding wheel and a mechanism for moving the grinding wheel into engagement with the dresser unit to dress the wheel and restoring the grinding wheel with compensation for the amount of material removed by the dresser unit from the periphery of the grinding wheel to the position in which the axis about which the wheel head turns lies tangentially to the periphery of the grinding wheel.
