摘要: Diffusion coating a substrate metal with a different metal, such as aluminum and zinc, that is then chemically removed from the coated substrate, provides the residual metal with a very desirable catalytic surface. At least about a third of the removable metal can be dissolved out. Platinum wire screens activated in this way make effective exhaust catalysts for automotive engines. Chromium-rich coating for protective purposes can be applied on a superalloy, diffusion coating in a pack that in addition to the chromium to be diffused, also contains at least about 3% Ni.sub.3 Al. Also the formation of alpha-chromium is reduced when the pack diffusion is carried out in a retort effectively not over five inches in height. Pack aluminizing in the presence of chromium makes a very effective aluminum- and chromium-containing top coating over platinum plated or platinum coated nickel-base superalloys. Depletion of diffusible material from workpieces heated in a powder-pack can also provide a surface on which aluminizing produces a highly impact-resistant coating.

摘要: In the diffusion coating of aluminum onto brazed metal, the penetration of the aluminum into the brazing is reduced by conducting the diffusion coating with hydrated aluminum chloride, bromide or iodide as energizer, with the energizer preferably kept out of contact with the work being coated until the energizer volatilizes. This is particularly suited for aluminizing chromium-containing surfaces. Chromium diffusion coatings are less apt to form undesirable oxide inclusions when the diffusion coating is from a pack containing at least about 3% Ni3Al. Also the formation of undesirable alpha-chromium is reduced when the pack diffusion is carried out with a retort effectively not over 5 inches in height. Pack aluminizing where the aluminizing is inhibited by the presence of chromium in the pack makes a very effective top coating over platinum plated or platinum coated nickel-base superalloys. Aluminized nickel can also have it aluminum attacked and at least partially removed with aqueous caustic to leave a very highly active catalytic surface. Pack diffusion can also be arranged to simultaneously provide different coatings in different locations by using different pack compositions in those locations. An aluminizing pack containing a large amount of chromium provides a thinner aluminized case than an aluminizing pack containing less chromium and some silicon. Also a cobalt-chromium pack deposits essentially a chromized case when energized with a chloride, but deposits large amounts of cobalt along with chromium when energized with an iodide.

摘要: A process includes applying a slurry to a surface of a metallic article to produce a slurry film on the surface. The slurry is composed of a liquid carrier, chromium and aluminum, and an agent that is reactive with the chromium and aluminum to form intermediary compounds. The article and slurry film are then thermally treated at an activation temperature at which the agent reacts with the chromium and aluminum to form the intermediary compounds. The intermediary compounds deposit the chromium and aluminum on the surface. The thermal treating also diffuses the chromium and aluminum into a sub-surface region of the article such that the sub-surface region becomes enriched with chromium and aluminum.

摘要: A method of coating a superalloy substrate, includes (a) aluminising the surface of the substrate to form an inner coating layer; (b) applying a slurry with a solid content including Cr, Al, Ni and Co onto the inner coating layer, where the Cr-content of the solid content is between 15% and 30% by weight thereof, and diffusion heat treating the slurry applied to the inner coating layer at a temperature above 800° C. for 1 to 8 hours to form an intermediate coating layer; and (c) applying a Cr-free slurry with a solid content including Al and Ni onto the intermediate coating layer, where the Al-content of the solid content is between 15% and 30% by weight of the solid content, and diffusion heat treating the slurry applied onto the intermediate surface layer at a temperature above 800° C. for 1 to 8 hours to form an outer coating layer.

摘要: The inner surface of ethylene furnace tubes is diffusion coated with a sufficient amount of chromium or chromium and silicon to form a first coating having a thickness of at least two mils. This coating is then cleaned, neutralized, and grit blasted. Then a second coating of a sufficient amount of aluminum or aluminum and silicon is diffused onto the first coating to form a total coating thickness of at least five mils. The surface of the second coating is cleaned and polished to remove the nickel and iron-rich overlay which is present as a result of the coating process and to provide a smooth uniform surface. When ethelyene is produced using furnace tubes which are coated in this manner less coking occurs.

摘要: In manufacturing a corrosion-resistant metallic porous member having high Cr content by diffusion process in which the material is heat-treated, a plurality of heat cycles are used to achieve uniform Cr content in the thickness direction. Metallic porous body of Ni, Fe, Ni-Cr or Fe-Cr is buried in a powder of Al, Cr and NH.sub.4 Cl. Inert gas such as Ar and H.sub.2 is introduced and the porous body is heat treated at 800.degree.-1100.degree. C. In the heat treatment, at least two temperature-increase and temperature-decrease steps are included.
