摘要:
A method of manufacturing self-pierce rivets from a length of wire comprises separating the length of wire to form a plurality of slugs, each slug defining a head end and a tail end. The method further comprises forging a plurality of rivets from the slugs, each rivet having a head formed from the head end of a slug and a tip formed from the tail end of that slug, the head and the tip of the rivet being separated by a shank which defines a longitudinal axis, the rivet having a bore which runs substantially longitudinally through the tip and at least part way along the shank. For each of the plurality of rivets, the method comprises performing a machining operation on the tip the rivet or on the tail end of the slug from which the rivet was forged.

The present invention relates, amongst other things, to a punch-in element having a hollow head part of larger transverse dimension and a hollow shaft part of smaller transverse dimension which projects away from one side of the head part, wherein a ring-like sheet metal contact surface is formed at the said side of the head part and surrounds the shaft part, with a plurality of ribs at the outer periphery of the shaft part which extend in the axial direction along the shaft part from the sheet metal contact surface to close to the free end of the shaft part. A pre-installation component, a component assembly and a method is also claimed.

A method of cold forming a self-attaching female fastener (20) which includes deforming a fastener blank (120) having an annular pilot, (122) an annular flange (128) surrounding the pilot and a groove (132) in the flange having cylindrical walls and annular protrusions (152, 154) on the flange and pilot, then deforming the protrusions toward each other to form an annular re-entrant groove (32) having relatively inclined arcuate walls.

A method of making an elongated mandrel having an end integral with a drill section, with the method including the steps of subjecting a single columnar piece of material to the heading process so as to make a blank N composed of the mandrel, a short stem having one end integral with the end of the mandrel and having a diameter D greater than a diameter of the mandrel, and a flange formed integral with the other end of the stem. The short stem is then cold forged to produce the drill section having end edges (7a) and (7b) facing the flange, and, subsequently, the drill section is trimmed so as to remove the flange together with a scrap resulting from the cold forging of the stem, in such a manner that the mandrel having the integral drill section can be mass produced from the single piece of raw material, efficiently at a reduced cost.

A fastener mandrel has formed on one end a shoulder and a twisted, generally rectangular shaped head adjoining the shoulder. In setting the fastener in a workpiece, the shoulder enlarges the end of a tubular rivet and clamps workpieces together in combination with a preformed head on the other end of the rivet. The mandrel head deforms the rivet tail into a twisted appearing shape with a somewhat elliptical cross-section that partially encloses the mandrel head to provide good stem retention and prevent axial looseness. A plurality of axial ribs on the mandrel stem are drawn into a reduced diameter section of the rivet head end when the rivet is set, thereby providing additional stem retention and torsional interference.

The fastener assembly includes a generally solid pin, positioned within a tubular fastener body and a buckle sleeve. The fastener body has a generally cylindrical configuration and includes an enlarged head adjacent one end thereof, an intermediate shank portion, and a nose portion adjacent the other end thereof. The nose portion engage the buckle sleeve, and during installation causes the buckle of the buckle sleeve to form prior to workpiece contact by the interaction between the nose portion of the fastener and the leading edge of the buckle sleeve. The sleeve buckles the intersection between a trailing section and the largest inner diameter at the end of a tapered interior section.

An elongated stem extends through a bore in a sleeve having a preformed head at one end. The sleeve extends through aligned holes in one or more workpieces to be fastened together. Pulling the stem through the sleeve causes an enlarged tail on the stem to be drawn into the end of the sleeve opposite the preformed head. The sleeve thus expands, forming a blind head. The workpieces are sandwiched between the preformed head and the blind head. To prevent the stem from sliding out of the sleeve, a locking collar is provided within the sleeve bore. The collar is slideable from a first position spaced from the preformed head to a second position within the preformed head. The collar is engaged by a shoulder on the stem and is moved from the first position to the second position as the stem is pulled through the sleeve. When in the second position, the collar is prevented from further movement, and is deformed as the stem continues to advance. The deformed collar fills an annular lock pocket within the preformed head and an annular locking groove surrounding the stem, thus preventing movement of the stem relative to the sleeve. The collar is formed from the sleeve material and is positioned within the sleeve prior to the insertion of the stem. In the manufacture of the sleeve, a reduced diameter bore portion is formed. An annular portion of the sleeve material surrounding the reduced diameter bore portion is separated from the remainder of the sleeve in a shearing operation, thus forming the collar.

Apparatus for converting short tubular elements into nuts, fittings, sleeves, or other annular fasteners or couplers comprises means defining a plurality of stations including a receiving station and a plurality of working stations. Each tubular element must be positioned in each station in the course of its conversion. The receiving station is constructed to establish a predetermined orientation of each tube received thereby. Mechanism is provided for automatic and successive transfer of the tube elements from the receiving to the following stations, in series relation. Tooling is provided in essentially coaxial alignment with each of the tube elements at each working station. The tooling in each working station is arranged to apply endwise of the tool element in the path thereof and/or, at least in part, along the length and axially thereof to produce a change in configuration and/or dimension of at least a part of the tube element while maintaining its originally provided interior cross section along at least a portion of its length. The transfer mechanism is normally displaced from the receiving and working stations and includes means for engaging tubular elements simultaneously in each of a plurality of stations and to simultaneously carry each engaged tube element from one to the next following stations in each repetitive cycle of its movement. Cycling of the tube elements from one to another station is effected in a rapid and precise substantially linear pattern of movement.

In the manufacture of a blind rivet, a threaded mandril is positioned endwise in a flanged, cylindrical, rivet body. The mandril-containing body is then advanced into a work station between a pair of spaced-apart, C-shaped die sections. The die sections are specially shaped so that when they are forcibly brought together with the rivet body between them, they first almost fully encircle and capture the body without physically appreciably deforming it. Then as the die sections bottom against one another, they coin the rivet body thereby staking the mandril in the body while simultaneously forming a pair of precisely sized, diametrically opposite ribs in the rivet body that extend part way along the length of the body intermediate its ends.
