The second forging die and the die cavity of the first forging die form a low friction contact.

The enlarged shank portion may have a nominal shank portion extending therefrom. The method may additionally include inserting the nominal shank portion into a bore of a final reduction die, applying a second axial compression force to the enlarged shank portion, and urging the enlarged shank portion into the bore of the final reduction die. The method may also include reducing a cross-sectional area of the enlarged shank portion by approximately 2 to 5 percent to form a cold-worked shank section.

A unitary metal connector pin formed by a cold heading die has a body with a disc-like expanded portion on a first end thereof which is adapted to engage and retain a first body when the pin is inserted through a first aperture in the first body. On a second, opposed end of the pin are disposed plural spaced flexible fingers each having a respective outwardly projecting, radially expanded portion. The radially expanded portions form a segmented outer ring on the pin capable of first undergoing inward deflection, followed by outward radial expansion for engaging a second body when the fingered end of the pin is inserted through a second aperture in the second body for securely coupling the two bodies together. The cold heading die includes a first stage for forming in a connector pin blank a first hollowed-out end portion with the flexible fingers and a second stage for forming the second radially expanded end portion and the outer projections on the flexible fingers.

In a blind fastener (20) of the kind comprising a tubular nut (22) having shank (28) with a head (30) at one end and a tapered nose (32) at the other end, a headed bolt (24) threadedly engaged in the bore (34) of the nut (22), and an expansible sleeve (26) which, by rotating the bolt (24), can be forced on to the nose (32) to form a blind head, a section of the shank (28) of the nut (22) is formed with a single protuberance (42) which protrudes resiliently into the bore (34) sufficiently to interfere with and restrain rotation of the bolt in the nut, and thus render the fastener self-locking. The shank (28) may have more than one section provided with a single such protuberance (42), the effect of several protuberances being additive. Each protuberance (42) lies entirely within a minor sector of its section of the shank, and presents either a flat or a curved threaded surface traversed by the thread (38). Protuberances may be in different sectors if spaced longitudinally of the shank. Each protuberance is formed by impressing a minor zone of the external surface of the thank with a punch (74) while supporting a diametrically opposite zone in a nest (70) shaped so as to substantially preserve the cylindrical shape of the shank in the remaining major sector. A cap (16) is used in cooperation with the nest (70) to define an angled cavity (79) to restrain deformation and axial bending of the shank (28) during the impressing by the punch (74).

A machine for automatically assembling the tubular rivet and pin of a blind rivet assembly. The tubular rivets and pins are fed from supply hoppers along a pair of chutes, one of which carries a sequence of rivets and the other of which carriesa sequence of pins. The chutes terminate at a pair of rotatably indexable turrets which have peripheral configurations adapted to pick off and carry the rivets and pins from the ends of their respective chutes. The turrets are rotatably indexed to bring the rivets and pins sequentially to an assembly station at which the pin and rivet are axially aligned with each other and in readiness to enable the pin to be driven into and through the tubular rivet. A hammering mechanism is employed to drive the pin through the sleeve to a finally assembled configuration with the sleeve and the assembled pin and rivet then are ejected from the machine.

A method and apparatus for forming shouldered tubular rivets is disclosed in which three forming operations are provided, two of which are performed in a single die station. In the first operation, the head end of the blank is squared and the inner end is trapped extruded. In the second operation, both the shoulder and the inner end of the blank are squared. During such second operation, the volume required to form the entire shank is confined within the die and the projecting portion of the blank is headed so that variations in blank volume appear as variations in the head. In the last or third operation, the tubular section is extruded on the inner end of the blank. An apparatus for performing the method is disclosed which permits the accurate positioning of a sleeve and an extrusion pin with respect to the die during the second operation to insure proper squaring of the inner end of the blank and the confinement of the exact volume of material required to form the entire shank of the rivet.

The present invention relates, amongst other things, to a punch-in element having a hollow head part of larger transverse dimension and a hollow shaft part of smaller transverse dimension which projects away from one side of the head part, wherein a ring-like sheet metal contact surface is formed at the said side of the head part and surrounds the shaft part, with a plurality of ribs at the outer periphery of the shaft part which extend in the axial direction along the shaft part from the sheet metal contact surface to close to the free end of the shaft part. A pre-installation component, a component assembly and a method is also claimed.
