Abstract:
A method for manufacturing a magnetoresistive sensor that results in the sensor having a very flat top magnetic shield. The process involves depositing a plurality of sensor layers and then depositing a thin high density carbon CMP stop layer over the sensor layers and forming a mask over the CMP stop layer. An ion milling is performed to define the sensor. Then a thin insulating layer and magnetic hard bias layer are deposited. A chemical mechanical polishing is performed to remove the mask and a reactive ion etching is performed to remove the remaining carbon CMP stop layer. Because the CMP stop layer is very dense and hard, it can be made very thin. This means that when it is removed by reactive ion etching, there is very little notching over the sensor, thereby allowing the upper shield to be very thin.
Abstract:
A method for writing data to a disk drive. The method includes: receiving a write command; and, determining whether a beginning and an end of a rewrite area specified by the write command agree with boundaries of large-sized data sectors on a disk. The method also includes: reading head and tail data sectors and making a backup of the head and tail data sectors in first and second non-volatile memory areas, respectively, if the beginning of the rewrite area does not agree with the boundaries. The method includes starting a rewrite of the rewrite area after completing backups into first and second non-volatile memory areas. Moreover, the method includes: determining a state stage by using data in first, second, third and fourth non-volatile memory areas if a power shut-down occurs during execution of the write command; and, executing a recovery process in accordance with the determined state stage.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention help to provide a flying height adjusting type magnetic head slider with reduced influence of a heater coil induction field. According to one embodiment, a magnetic head slider comprises a heater, a read element, and a write element, which are formed on a substrate. The heater is formed between a lower magnetic shield of the read element and the substrate by meandering a heater coil in direction Y going away from ABS. Magnetic fields by generated in direction Y orthogonal to a track width direction X of the lower magnetic field upon energization of the heater coil are offset each other, exerting no influence on the magnetized state in the track width direction X of the lower magnetic shield. A magnetic field hx induced in the track width direction X of the lower magnetic shield is coincident with the magnetizing direction of the lower magnetic shield, acting to maintain the magnetized state of the lower magnetic shield.

The slider includes an air bearing surface, a front shallow step pad and a rear shallow step pad that are at a first level deeper than the air bearing surface. The slider further includes a first rear side pocket that is at a second level deeper than the air bearing surface, the first side pocket substantially polygon shaped and a second rear non-symmetrical side pocket non-symmetrical with the first rear side pocket that is at the second level deeper than the air bearing surface, the second side pockets substantially polygon shaped wherein the second rear non-symmetrical side pocket comprises a larger volume than the first rear side pocket.
Abstract:
A method, apparatus and a data storage device are provided for implementing data confidentiality and integrity of data stored in overlapping, shingled data tracks on a recordable surface of a storage device. A unique write counter is stored for each zone written to the recordable surface of the storage device. An encryption key is used together with the write counter information and a logical block address to encrypt each sector being written, and to decrypt all sectors being read. An individual sector is decrypted, obtaining the write counter information and reading the data sector. A message authentication code is stored for each zone. All sectors of the zone are read to perform integrity check on a sector.
Abstract:
A magnetic disk drive includes a magnetic recording medium and a magnetic head slider adapted to fly over a surface of a magnetic recording medium and read or write information. The magnetic head slider includes a slider air bearing surface and a magnetic transducer. The slider air bearing surface includes a front pad having front rail surfaces and front step bearing surfaces, a rear pad having a rear rail surface and a rear step bearing surface, and a negative-pressure groove interposed between the front pad and the rear pad. A vibration suppressing groove is formed in the rear rail surface so as to be deeper than the rear rail surface and to be closed at its periphery. The vibration suppressing groove quickly damps out translational and pitching vibrations in the flying height direction of the magnetic head slider while stabilizing its flying.

Embodiments of the present invention help to produce discrete track media and bit patterned media having both excellent recording and reproducing performance and reliability. According to one embodiment, a manufacturing method forms a nonmagnetic layer mainly composed of the same element as a nonmagnetic element contained in magnetic recording layers and on the magnetic recording layers and a mask layer having apertures for forming more concentrated parts of the nonmagnetic element in the magnetic recording layers on the nonmagnetic layer. The method implants ions of the nonmagnetic element through the nonmagnetic layer masked by the mask layer to form the more concentrated parts of the nonmagnetic element in the magnetic recording layer.
Abstract:
Embodiments in accordance with the present invention provide a magnetic disk drive that reliably prevents entry of water or other form of liquid through a breathing hole for the enhanced performance, reliability, and the like. In one embodiment, a box body forming part of a hard disk drive (HDD) has a top cover. The top cover includes a breathing hole drilled therein. The breathing hole serves to eliminate any pressure difference between an inside and an outside of the HDD. A fiber waterproof body, which includes a waterproof fiber material or the like, is fitted in a large-diameter hole of the breathing hole. A pore waterproof body, formed by bundling up a large number of slender pores, is mounted in a small-diameter hole of the breathing hole.

A method and apparatus are provided for implementing secure erase for solid state drives (SSDs). An encryption key is used to encrypt data being written to SSD. A controller identifies a key storage option, and responsive to the identified key storage option, stores a key for data encryption and decryption. The controller deletes the key within the SSD responsive to the identified key storage option, ensuring that once the key is deleted, the key is not recoverable and data is effectively erased.
