Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for providing support for location and emergency calls for an over-the-top (OTT) service provider (SP) are disclosed. An access network node receives a first message from a UE, determines a location reference for the UE, and sends a second message including the location reference to the UE. The access network node may determine the location reference itself on behalf of a location server or may request the location server to assign and return the location reference. The access network node may serve as a proxy and avoid interaction between the UE and the location server. The location server may later receive a location request for the UE from a network entity wherein the location request includes the location reference. The location server may locate the UE using the location reference and return the UE location to the network entity.

For example, a method for SUPL redirection by a SET, may include: receiving an initiation message at a SET from a Home SUPL Location Platform (H-SLP); establishing a secure connection with the H-SLP, and returning a response message; receiving a redirect message from the H-SLP; establishing a SET initiated SUPL session with a D-SLP; obtaining a location of the SET using the D-SLP; and returning the location to the H-SLP.

Abstract: Uplink high efficiency transport of location information from a user equipment (UE) may include initiating a periodic or triggered location session in a UE by a location server (LS) in a wireless network. The UE may enter an idle state and monitor for a triggering event. After detecting an event, the UE may obtain location information, determine a nearby base station, and obtain a temporary signaling channel from the base station. The UE transmits the location information to the base station and includes a UE identification (ID), an ID for the LS, and an authentication code (AC). The location information may be ciphered but other information is unciphered. The base station transfers the received information to the LS which may authenticate the UE ID using the AC, determine the UE location using the location information and transfer the UE location to an external client.

Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for providing location services for user equipment (UE) devices in a radio access network (RAN) such as a Fifth Generation (5G) RAN. Location services may be supported by separate positioning domains that may include a Device to Device domain, a RAN domain and a core network (CN) domain. The RAN domain may include a location server function (LSF) that may support positioning services autonomously within the RAN or in collaboration with a D2D or CN domain. The CN domain may include a location server (LS) that may support control plane and/or user plane location. The RAN domain may enable high volume and low latency location service whereas the CN domain may enable high accuracy service and services for external clients.

Abstract: Techniques described herein provide ways in which a quantity of signaling may be limited between a user equipment (UE) and a location server (LS) for a location session and a positioning protocol such as LPP or LPP/LPPe. The positioning protocol may be enhanced to allow the LS to indicate to the UE a limit on the overall size of assistance data (AD) that the UE can request and/or a limit on the overall amount of location information (LI) that the UE can return. A recipient UE can then prioritize any request for AD such that more important AD should fit within the size limit. The recipient UE can also prioritize returned location measurements such that more useful measurements are included in a message to the LS that is compliant to the limit indicated by the LS.

Abstract: A mobile station performs Observed Time Difference of Arrival (OTDOA) positioning by measuring a time of arrival (TOA) of downlink signals transmitted from a reference cell and one or more neighbor cells. Reference Signal Time Differences (RSTDs) are generated using TOA measurements from the reference cell and each neighbor cell. The mobile station reports to a location server location information, including the RSTD measurements and the times of measurement for the TOA measurements. The mobile station may further generate and report additional RSTD and/or TOA measurements and associated times of measurement for the reference cell and/or neighbor cells. A location server may use the RSTD measurements, the times of measurement and any TOA measurements to determine a position of the mobile station taking into account user motion and base station clock drift and/or may adjust the uncertainty of the resulting position.
