Subjects for the invention are: to provide an electrophotographic photoreceptor which has excellent electrical characteristics and which, even when repeatedly used over long, can stably form high-quality satisfactory images having high resolution; and to provide an electrophotographic photoreceptor cartridge and an image-forming apparatus each employing the electrophotographic photoreceptor. The invention provides an electrophotographic photoreceptor for use in an image-forming apparatus comprising a charging unit which charges an electrophotographic photoreceptor, an exposure unit which exposes the charged electrophotographic photoreceptor to light to form an electrostatic latent image on the electrophotographic photoreceptor, and a developing unit which develops the electrostatic latent image, wherein the electrophotographic photoreceptor comprises a conductive substrate and a photosensitive layer and the photosensitive layer contains a compound represented by the following formula (1). The photoreceptor is further characterized in that the exposure unit has an LED, or that the electrostatic latent image has a resolution of 1,200 dpi or higher, or that the electrostatic latent image is developed with a toner and the toner has an average degree of circularity as determined with a flow type particle image analyzer of 0.94-1.00, or that the image-forming apparatus is of the full-color tandem type. The invention further provides an electrophotographic photoreceptor cartridge and an image-forming apparatus each employing the electrophotographic photoreceptor. Silicon-containing layers that have been prepared by a sol-gel method and include sol-gel polymerization products of siloxane-containing compounds, disilanol compounds and alcohols are provided. Methods for preparing silicon-containing layers including sol-gel polymerization products of siloxane-containing compounds, disilanol compounds and alcohols are also provided. In addition, photoreceptors and image-forming apparatus including such silicon-containing layers are provided.
