摘要: In an internal combustion engine (10), exhaust gas leaves a combustion chamber (14) via at least one outlet valve (36) which is opened by an actuator after termination of a working stroke. A pressure value is determined, which characterizes the pressure of the gas in the combustion chamber during the working stroke. An actual value of the valve lift of the outlet valve (36) is determined, together with actual operating parameters of the internal combustion engine (10) which affect this opening stroke, and based on the determined actual valve lift of the outlet valve (36) and actual operating parameters of the internal combustion engine (10), an actual gas pressure in the combustion chamber (14) at the time of the opening of the outlet valve is calculated at least approximately.

An exhaust valve of the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine is opened during a discharge phase of the internal combustion engine for discharging exhaust gas, generated via combustion, from a combustion chamber into an exhaust system of the internal combustion engine. The exhaust valve is closed again and re-opened during this discharge phase.

摘要: A compression ignition internal combustion engine according to the present invention includes: at least one combustion chamber; an intake passage and an exhaust passage connected to the combustion chamber, respectively; intake valve provided at a position along the intake passage, for opening and closing the intake passage; exhaust valve provided at a position along the exhaust passage, and is driven by a cam, for opening and closing the exhaust passage, the exhaust valve opening the exhaust passage for a period of at least a portion of an exhaust stroke, and for a period of at least a portion of an intake stroke, during compression ignition combustion mode and during spark ignition combustion mode; and an exhaust throttle provided at a position along the exhaust passage, for opening and closing the exhaust passage, the exhaust throttle recirculating exhaust gas to the combustion chamber by opening the exhaust passage at least during the intake stroke during compression ignition combustion mode, the exhaust throttle preventing the recirculation of the exhaust gas to the combustion chamber by closing the exhaust passage for a period at least when the exhaust valve is open in the intake stroke during spark ignition combustion mode.

摘要: Methods and apparatus for providing bleeder-type and compression-release engine braking in an internal combustion engine are disclosed. For bleeder-type engine braking, the exhaust valve is maintained at a small and relatively constant lift throughout all or much of the engine cycle. The engine braking may be combined with exhaust gas recirculation, variable exhaust brake, and/or operation of a variable geometry turbocharger.

摘要: An engine valve actuator providing Miller cycle benefits and a method of operating an engine valve actuator are disclosed. The valve actuator employs a first force to hold an exhaust valve of the engine open during an exhaust stroke and a second, stronger force to hold the exhaust valve open during a compression stroke. The valve actuator may be operated using pressurized fluid adapted to extend an actuator piston through a cylinder. The first force may be derived by a mechanically driven actuator, while the second force may be derived from a high pressure rail of the engine. A low pressure source of the engine may be used to fill the actuator cylinder, with the high pressure rail only being placed into fluid communication with the cylinder when desired. A control valve may be employed to direct either the low pressure or high pressure fluid to the valve actuator cylinder.

In order to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions during part-load operation, the exhaust means of each cylinder open (1 and 2) respectively during the exhaust phase so as to discharge the burnt gases from the cylinder and during the intake phase so as to reintroduce burnt gases into the cylinder, the time of opening (3) of an intake means being deferred so to allow fresh gas to pass into the cylinder after partial filling thereof with the burnt gases.

摘要: A valve train for an internal combustion engine has a variable valve performance mechanism for changing the valve open angle of at least one set of intake valves and exhaust valves. The valve train further includes an electronic control unit (ECU) for controlling the variable valve performance mechanism and a sensor for detecting the running state of the engine. The ECU judges whether there is a malfunction in the engine based on detection signals from the sensor. If there is a malfunction in the engine, the ECU actuates the variable valve performance mechanism to decrease the valve overlap thereby performing a failsafe. The ECU also advances the closing timing of the intake valves. Alternatively, the ECU retards the opening timing of the exhaust valve.

摘要: The present invention is a process for controlling self-ignition in a four-stroke engine comprising variable control of the opening and the closing of the intake and exhaust in the combustion chamber as a function of the engine load. At partial load the invention performs (a) prolonged retention of burned gases in the combustion chamber, and (b) a fresh gas intake period which overall follows the retention period, in order to minimize mixing of the fresh gases with the burned gases and to control the amount of burned gases retained in the combustion chamber.
