    Abstract: A fluidic card assembly (1) comprises an inlet (20) for introducing a fluid to the fluidic card assembly (1), a turbulent flow portion (30) downstream of the inlet (20), the turbulent flow portion (30) comprising a widening fluid channel (31) whereby a fluid introduced via the inlet (20) channel undergoes turbulence, and a laminar flow portion (40) downstream of the turbulent flow portion (30). The laminar flow portion (40) is configured to allow fluid passing from the turbulent flow portion (30) into the laminar flow portion (40) to establish a laminar flow pattern, and is configured to house a biochip (44) such that a fluid in the laminar flow portion (40) may be in contact with the biochip (44).

    Abstract: A pipette tip carrier assembly suitable for storing elongate pipette tips in a biochemical analyser is described. The pipette tip carrier assembly comprises one or more holding elements each adapted to hold, in use, a respective pipette tip oriented such that the elongate dimension of the held pipette tip is parallel to a first axis. The pipette tip carrier assembly also includes a light source arranged to produce, at a position distal to the one or more holding elements along the first axis, light directed towards each of the one or more holding elements so as to be intercepted by one or more pipette tips held in 10 use by the one or more holding elements.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a novel method of in vitro sample preparation for the analysis of proteins. In a first aspect, the present invention is a method comprising the separation and individual treatment of blood platelets and platelet-poor plasma obtained from a platelet-rich plasma sample. This allows for optimal treatment of both fractions and overcomes many of the problems associated with current methods. In a second aspect of the present invention the platelet sample preparation method can be implemented before a biochip based immunoassay for the detection of platelet proteins in combination with plasma proteins.

    Abstract: According to the invention there is a microfluidic chip 1 that includes at least two layers 10 forming a stack of layers, each layer of which has at least one flow channel 14; a bore 16 extending through the layers and communicating with a plurality of flow channels; and a valve 20, which has a shaft 22 with a recess 222 in a side of the shaft for fluid to flow through. The shaft is rotatably mounted in the bore, and has a first position in which the recess is aligned with each of at least two flow channels of the plurality of flow channels thereby providing a flow path between said at least two flow channels, and a second position in which the recess is unaligned with at least one of said at least two flow channels the flow path between said at least two flow channels thereby being closed. This allows a fluid flow path between two flow channels to be open and closed by rotation of the shaft so that fluid in the microfluidic chip can be redirected to allow the chip to have greater capability and by using a minimal amount of space on the chip to do so.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an ex vivo method for aiding the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in a patient comprising: (i) determining the number of alleles of ApoE4 in the patient's genome; (ii) determining the combined expression level of at least three platelet proteins in a platelet sample from the patient; and (iii) comparing the resulting value of step (ii) to a control value, wherein the at least three platelet proteins include at least one isoform of alpha-tropomyosin containing exon 1a and at least two platelet proteins selected from monoamine oxidase-B, coagulation factor XIIIa, wild-type GSTO-1 or mutant GSTO-1, wherein a result higher than the control value is indicative of Alzheimer's disease.The invention also provides a solid support comprising one or more ligands of at least one isoform of alpha-tropomyosin containing exon 1a, and one or more ligands of at least two platelet proteins selected from monoamine oxidase-B, coagulation factor XIIIa, wild-type GSTO-1 protein and/or mutant GSTO-1 protein immobilised thereon.
