A product display surface supports at least one product being offered for sale thereon. This product display surface has a weight-sensitive RFID tag associated therewith. This tag has at least one transmission element that moves with respect to a remaining portion of the tag as a function of weight being supported by the product display surface. So configured, the weight-sensitive RFID tag transmits at a first level when there are no products (or only a few products) on the product display surface and at a second level when there are at least a predetermined number of products on the product display surface, the first transmission level being less than the second transmission level. An RFID-tag reader reads the weight-sensitive RFID tag and a control circuit determines when the first product display surface lacks sufficient displayed inventory as a function, at least in part, of the weight-sensitive RFID tag's transmission strength.

An electronic balance is provided, which adequately exhibits quick response and displaying stability when being used to measure a number of objects. The electronic balance includes a number-of-objects calculating section, for counting a number (Nwa) of objects from the moving average (Wa) and the unit weight (Wu) when the moving average process is being executed and counting a number (Nw) of objects from the load value (W) and the unit weight (Wu) when the moving average process stops; and a display section, for displaying the calculated numbers (Nw, Nwa) of the to-be-measured objects.

The present invention provides a weighing apparatus for weighing coins accumulated in a coin hopper using a load cell and automatically taking a periodic readings of the number of coins accumulated in the hopper. By periodically monitoring the hopper and automatically calculating the number of coins in the hopper, theft of coins and other irregularities can be easily and timely detected. The unauthorized removal of coins during an actual or purported maintenance procedure can be detected by automatically determining a count of coins before a hopper access door is opened, automatically counting the number of coins once the door is closed, and using those two counts to determine the change in the number of coins in the hopper at the time of the change. In a preferred embodiment, the identity of the person opening the hopper door and the time in which the hopper door is opened and closed are recorded, along with any detected discrepancy between the change in coin count and an expected change, if any, in coin count.

A method of stabilizing a plurality of soiled towels and determining the quantity of the towels comprises removing any foreign objects from the soiled towels, saturating the soiled towels with a liquid that prevents the evaporation of any volatile compounds, compressing the saturated towels to remove unabsorbed liquid, then weighing the compressed towels and calculating the approximate number of towels present by dividing the weight of the soiled compressed towels by the known weight of a soiled compressed towel. An apparatus for performing the method also is disclosed.

The invention is directed to a counting scale which implements a load cell assembly for the measurement of weight used in counting calculations. A load cell in such an assembly has a beam structure with beams positioned parallel to each other in at least one plane. Generally, these parallel beams are attached to a stationary base and have sensing means attached between the two beams and the base. These sensing means are preferably resonators which have resonant frequencies that vary in response to an applied force on the load cell. A controller is included in the assembly to drive these resonators, convert their frequency outputs to digital values, and correct for various environmental effects, to obtain an accurate weight measurement for use in the counting scale.

Weighing apparatus for weighing currency notes or coins has a weighing platform (4) coupled to a load cell (14) for generating a weight signal dependent upon the weight of items on the platform. The weighing machine includes a microprocessor (26) with associated memory (32, 34) which determines the number and/or value of the weighed items by dividing the weight signal by an appropriate weight factor. Where the quotient obtained is not an exact integer it is rounded. The quotient is compared with tolerance limits and a warning is given if the quotient falls outside these limits. To increase the accuracy of the machine while maintaining or reducing the number of warnings, means are provided to vary said tolerance limits in accordance with said weight signal or with said quotient.

A medication dispenser that includes a receptacle having a counting compartment with a first opening into the receptacle and a second opening through which the pills are dispensed. To be dispensed, the pills must passthrough the counting compartment and are counted during such passage. Both openings are blocked or unblocked by logic built into or remotely connected to the dispenser, which logic determines whether the pills in the compartment should be dispensed. In one embodiment of the dispenser, the pills are counted by sensing the amount of light that is passed through the compartment. The logic counts the pills by subtracting the amount of light transmitted through the compartment when it contains pills from the amount of light transmitted through an empty compartment and comparing the result to the known size of the pills. In an alternative embodiment, the pills are weighed in the counted compartment and the weight is compared to the known weight of a single pill. In a second alternative embodiment, radiation emitted by the pills is counted with a radiation detector.

A conveyor (10) conveys stacks of newspapers to a weigh station (A). The weigh station produces a digital weight signal which is processed by an electric circuit (B) to determine whether each bundle contains a preselected number of newspapers. A display (F) provides an indication whether or not the weighed bundle contains the preselected number of newspapers. More specifically, the electronic circuit includes a microprocessor (22) which is programmed to store a preselected number of acceptable bundle weights in a tare calculation memory (72). An algorithm implementing routine (78) averages the stored weights to determine an average weight or tare. A subtraction circuit or routine (52) subtractively combines the tare and the measured weight. A divider circuit or routine (56') divides the tare by twice the number of newspapers which are to be in each bundle to determine the weight of half a paper. A comparing circuit or routine (54) compares the weight difference signal with the weight of half an article to determine whether or not each measured bundle contains the proper number of papers. If the bundle contains the proper number of papers, the measured bundle weight replaces the least recently stored weight in the tare calculation memory and a new tare is determined. In this manner, the tare is readjusted after every acceptable bundle is weighed such that the tare is a function only of the weight of precedingly accepted bundles and may fluctuate widely with variations in the density of ink, paper, and the like.

This invention relates to a coin counter, and more particularly to a coin counter using a weighing scale to count and display the total sum of coins and to print out the sum at need, the counter also being capable of checking whether or not the total sum of coins placed on the weighing scale is included within a range between preset upper and lower limits.

In known methods of initializing a balance with counting scale a given quantity of the pieces to be counted is placed on the balance at the same time and the average individual weight is calculated therefrom and used as a base for the following piece counts. In contrast thereto, the invention suggests that the pieces be placed individually on the balance and that the standstill of the balance be waited for after each placing of a piece. This makes it possible to also calculate the standard deviation in addition to the average value and statements concerning the counting precision can be made which are based on known statistical laws, so that counting errors can be avoided.
