    摘要: In a process for decontaminating contaminated metallic scrap, an oxygen bearing hot gas stream is passed into the inlet end of a container and is discharged from an exit end of the same container. The decontaminated scrap is loaded in the container at the inlet end. Concurrently the scrap is (a) moved from the inlet end to the exit end, (b) mixed and agitated within the interior of the container, and (c) during the mixing and agitation contacted with the hot gas stream moving through the interior of the container. The contact of the scrap with the hot gas stream is under conditions essentially capable of inhibiting flaming. By virtue of the contact with the hot gas stream, heat from the hot gas stream is transferred to the scrap, which lowers the temperature of the hot gas stream while raising the temperature of the scrap. This heat transfer takes the scrap to a first temperature phase wherein contaminants such as organics are volatilized and/or cracked into volatiles which become dispensed and diluted in the gas stream. Further, water is converted into steam. The volatiles including the steam are rapidly removed from the container by virtue of their disbursement into the gas stream. Further transfer of heat to the scrap raises the scrap to a second temperature phase wherein contaminants which are not volatilable, but which are subject to oxidation below 1200.degree. F., are oxidized by oxygen in the gas stream. The scrap is maintained within the second temperature phase for a time sufficient to ensure complete oxidation and then the scrap is discharged from the container.

    摘要: An apparatus for treating gaseous pollutants in an air stream such as a regenerative thermal oxidizer or a selective catalytic reduction system, including a reaction chamber wherein the reaction media bed within the chamber comprises a plurality of nonprismatic ceramic blocks each having end faces, side faces and a chamfered face extending at an angle relative to the side faces of the blocks. The ceramic blocks are stacked in end-to-end and side-to-side relation within the reaction chamber and the ceramic blocks each include spaced parallel passages extending through the end and chamfered faces. The chamfered faces of adjacent blocks form voids between the blocks promoting turbulent gas flow through the voids and equalizing the pressure within the reaction chamber. The ceramic blocks may be symmetrical, wherein only a portion of the gas flows into the voids between the blocks and the remainder flows through the channels through the end faces or the ceramic blocks may be nonsymmetrical, wherein the chamfered faces are located vertically opposite an end face, such that all of the gas flowing through the reaction chamber flows through the gas passages into the voids between the blocks at alternative levels.

    摘要: An oven is disclosed as having a plurality of chambers which are sealed from the ambient atmosphere, and to which gas, heated to a high temperature outside the chambers, is circulated to each of the chambers for admixture with gas which is cool compared to the high temperature gas, to produce in the chambers a mixture of hot and cool gas at a predetermined temperature. The hot gas is circulated to the chambers at a certain desired pressure, wherein the cool gas is circulated to the chambers at a certain rate of flow. Gas is exhausted from the oven also at a fixed rate of flow. The gas pressure in the first oven to be encountered by an element passing through the oven, is monitored and triggers a change in the flow of cool gas when the pressure varies from a desired norm. This change in flow of cool gas influences the temperature which is also monitored. A change in the temperature produces a corresponding change in the mixture of hot and cool gas to return the oven temperature to the desired level.
