Abstract: A brush seal is provided that includes a top plate, a back plate, and a bristle pack. The bristle pack is secured at a joint between the top plate and the back plate. The bristle pack includes a first bristle set extending from the joint, a second bristle set extending from the joint, and a sliding backing plate. The sliding backing plate includes a sliding portion and a support portion. The sliding portion is disposed contiguous with the second bristle set. The support portion has an inner face and a support face. The inner face is in contact with a distal end of the second bristle set. The support face is configured to support at least a portion of the first bristle set. The sliding backing plate is configured to slide relative to the second bristle set.

Abstract: A cryogenic cooling system for an aircraft includes a first air cycle machine, a second air cycle machine, and a means for collecting liquid air. The first air cycle machine is operable to output a cooling air stream based on a first air source. The second air cycle machine is operable to output a chilled air stream at a cryogenic temperature based on a second air source cooled by the cooling air stream of the first air cycle machine. An output of the second air cycle machine is provided to the means for collecting liquid air.

Abstract: A method of reworking or repairing a component includes removing a casting defect from a component manufactured of a non-fusion weldable base alloy to form a cavity that results in a through hole; sealing the through hole with a backing; and at least partially filling the cavity with a multiple of layers of a multiple of laser powder deposition spots, each of the multiple of laser powder deposition spots formed of a filler alloy, a first layer of the multiple of layers includes a perimeter of the multiple of laser powder deposition spots that overlap a wall of the cavity and the backing.

Abstract: A method for designing a material for an aircraft component includes training a neural network to correlate microstructural features of an alloy with material properties of the alloy by at least providing a set of images of the alloy to the neural network. Each of the images in the set of images has varied constituent compositions. The method further includes providing the neural network with a set of determined material properties corresponding to each image, associating the microstructural features of each image with the set of empirically determined data corresponding to the image, and determining non-linear relationships between the microstructural features and corresponding empirically determined material properties via a machine learning algorithm, receiving a set of desired material properties of the alloy for aircraft component, and determining a set of microstructural features capable of achieving the desired material properties of the alloy based on the determined non-linear relationships.
