Abstract: A method for establishing a call in a telecommunications network that has first and second packet network sections, a wide area packet network, and a TDM transit network section. Subscribers'terminal equipment is addressable by directory numbers, and calls to subscribers are always routed through the TDM transit network. During TDM call setup at least one message or information element is conveyed to the second packet network section which is indicative of the first terminal equipment's packet capabilities and/or an address of a first controlling device controlling the call in the first packet network section. The message or information element is received at a second controlling device controlling the call in the second packet network section. Using the information extracted from the message or information element a second connection between the first and second terminal equipment through the wide area packet network is established by the controlling devices.

Abstract: A method allowing a subscriber to use call handling features on a call by call basis defines a plurality of feature profiles, each including a number of call handling features. The method stores the feature profiles either in a customer premises equipment or in a related switch, and activates one of the feature profiles by selecting one of the feature profiles and applying the call handling features in the feature profile to the calls as long as the feature profile is activated.

Abstract: A method for outputting sensitive data to a user includes a communication terminal checking to determine whether at least a portion of the sensitive data is to be outputted by determining whether the communication terminal is in one of a plurality of predefined communication configurations for outputting the sensitive data. If the communication terminal is found to be a first configuration, the communication terminal transmits the sensitive data so that at least one of the video data and the audio data is output to the user via at least one peripheral device connected to the communication terminal. If the communication terminal is in a second configuration, the communication terminal performs at least one security action to help further protect the sensitive data.

Abstract: A digital telecommunications system 100, a method of managing communications in such a system 100 and a program product 106, 120 for managing audio transmission in a digital communications system 100. Devices at network endpoints 108, 110, 112, e.g. session initiation protocol (SIP) devices, selectively, transparently provide voice samples 132, 132A, 132B, 134, 134A, 134B of sufficient quality for authentication 172 and identification during conversations 130 with the devices 108, 110, 112. The devices 108, 110, 112 respond to an authentication request 126, 128, e.g., from a bank accounting application 106, by collecting authentication samples 132, 132A, 132B, 134, 134A, 134B of an ongoing conversation with the samples 132, 132A, 132B, 134, 134A, 134B having sufficient detail for authentication 172. The devices 108, 110, 112 send the authentication samples 132, 132A, 132B, 134, 134A, 134B in parallel (e.g., segmented in the signaling channel 156) that do not disrupt the conversation 130. Authentication samples 132, 132A, 132B, 134, 134A, 134B may be verified 162 prior to authentication 172 by comparison against the corresponding portion of the ongoing conversation 130.

Abstract: A method of managing communications in a communications network and a program product therefore. Users provide lists of expected future locations, e.g., Serial Ringing (SR) lists. As each call traverses a user's SR-list to contact a respective user, the user's current location (i.e., the endpoint at which a call is answered) is noted and the list is automatically altered (e.g., reordered or timeouts shortened) to shorten the time between receiving an incoming call at the system and ringing the answering endpoint. Thereafter, the altered SR-list is used to locate the respective user.

Abstract: A Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communications system, a method of managing a communications network in such a system and a program product therefore. The system/network includes an ENERGY STAR (E-star) aware softswitch and E-star compliant communications devices at system endpoints. The E-star aware softswitch allows E-star compliant communications devices to enter and remain in power saving mode. The E-star aware softswitch spools messages and forwards only selected messages (e.g., calls) to the devices in power saving mode. When the E-star compliant communications devices exit power saving mode, the E-star aware softswitch forwards spooled messages.

Abstract: A method and apparatus that tests video quality includes a superimposing of at least one code to a video that is to be transmitted by a communication device to another communication device. The at least one code is transmitted such that the superimposed at least one code is extractable and readable from the decoded video by the device that receives the transmitted video. The extracted at least one code may then be read to determine the quality level of the transmitted video. The determination of quality for the received video may be based upon one or more tests performed using at least one code extracted from the received video.
