Abstract: Non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) may establish uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) radio frame timing structures to efficiently account for propagation delay and propagation delay variation associated with communications in the NTN. NTNs may manage (synchronize) radio frame timing structures of base stations (e.g., satellites) and user equipment (UEs) in the NTN. Further, UEs may determine timing advance (TA) values to be applied to UL transmissions based on their respective scheduling offset (e.g., offset in UL and DL radio frame timing structures), as well as based on propagation delay or round trip time (RTT). As such, served UEs may determine UL timing such that UL transmissions from the UEs to a satellite arrives at the satellite in a time synchronized manner. In other cases, a satellite may determine UL timing, based on reception timing, such that various UEs in the NTN may implement uniform UL and DL radio frame timing structures.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A communication device, such as a user equipment (UE) may identify information for transmitting to a base station of a non-terrestrial network. The UE may identify that one or more resources allocated for transmitting the information are available based at least in part on identifying the information. The one or more resources include one or more types of uplink resources including physical random access channel (PRACH) resources or physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) resources for the random access procedure, a PUSCH for a scheduling request (SR), or a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) for a configured grant, or a combination thereof. As a result, the UE may transmit, to the base station, a message over the one or more resources allocated for the information based at least in part on identifying the one or more resources.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may transmit buffer status information using configured periodic uplink resources. For example, a base station may configure dedicated periodic uplink resources, periodic random access resources, or periodic uplink grants to enable the UE to transmit the buffer status information. In some cases, the periodic random access resources may enable the UE to transmit a first message of a four-step or two-step random access procedure to indicate the buffer status information. Additionally or alternatively, the base station may configure a type of scheduling request for the UE to transmit that can indicate whether a buffer size falls within a range, where the base station then can more accurately allocate uplink resources in an uplink grant for the UE to transmit the uplink data based on receiving this type of scheduling request.
