THE MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM COMPRISES AN ALUMINUM ALLOY DISC SUBSTRATE COVERED BY XINC AND NICKEL LAYERS, OVERLAID BY A GOLD FILM AND THIN-FILM COBALT MAGNETIC LAYER. THE FABRICATION PROCESS INVOLVES ELECTROLESS DEPOSITION OF THIN-FILM LAYERS OF ZINC AND NICKEL ON THE SUBSTRATE, THEN THE DEPOSITION OF A ONE-HALF MICRO-INCH GOLD LAYER CONVERTED BY A COBBALT PHOSPHORUS THIN-FILM LAYER. THE METHOD PROVIDES FOR TAILORING OF THE VALUE OF COERCIVITY INDEPENDENT OF THE THICKNESS OF THE MAGNNETIC FILM LAYER.

A METHOD OF MAKING MAGNETIC DISC WHEREIN AN ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTING MATERIAL LAYER IS FORMED ON THE SUFACES OF A BASE PLATE MADE BY SHAPING A SYNTHETIC RESINOUS MATERIAL, THEN A MAGNETIC MATERIAL IS APPLIED TO THE COAT BY ELECTRODEPOSITION AND FINALLY THE SURFACES ARE POLISHED BY A POLISHING MATERIAL OF VERY SMALL GRAIN SIZE. THE LAYER OF MAGNETIC MATERIAL FORMED BY ELECTRODEPOSITION HAS ITS SURFACES RENDERED SMOOTH BY THE POLISHING OPERATION BECAUSE MINUTE FISSURES IN THE SURFACES ARE REMOVED AND AT THE SAME TIME THE MAGNETIC MATERIAL LAYER ITSELF IS ANNEALED BY THE HEAT OF FRICTION.

A production process for equipping a rough casting with a plurality of highly accurate surfaces at precisely predetermined locations on the casting without machining the casting. The casting includes a plurality of laterally spaced holes and is placed on a tool which supports a plurality of mounting bosses in the holes of the casting. The tool locates the bosses generally coaxial with the holes so that annular spaces are provided between the exterior of the bosses and the walls of the holes, which spaces are then filled with a bonding agent to secure the bosses to the casting. The tool positions selected faces of the bosses in desired relation to each other, preferably parallel to a reference surface defined by the tool. The tool seals an end of each annular space to prevent the bonding agent from flowing from the space as the agent cures.
