Abstract:
A downhole activation assembly for activating a downhole component of a downhole tool positionable in a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation. The activation assembly includes a housing operatively connectable to the downhole tool, a spring-loaded sleeve, and a ball catcher. The sleeve slidably positionable in the housing, and having a flow channel therethrough and an outer surface defining a chamber between the sleeve and the housing. The sleeve having inlets therethrough about a sleeve end thereof to permit fluid from the flow channel to pass therethrough. The ball catcher slidably positionable in the housing, and having a catcher end engageable with the sleeve end to selectively divert the fluid thereabout and a ball seat therein to receivingly engage a ball passing through the sleeve whereby the ball catcher selectively moves the downhole component between activation positions.
Abstract:
A running tool for well drilling operations is carried by a running string into and out of a wellbore. A collet is carried by the running tool, the collet having fingers with a radially expanded position arranged to latch against a wellbore shoulder in the wellbore. The fingers are resiliently and radially contractible. A shear element is carried by the collet, the shear element preventing the fingers from radially contracting to unlatch the running tool while the shear element is intact. If a selected axial force is applied against the shear element, it shears, freeing the collet fingers to retract. The collet may be part of a tool to set and release a liner hanger from engagement with a string of casing.
Abstract:
A system includes a tubular string and a hollow ball. The tubular string is adapted to be deployed downhole in a well and includes a seat. An activation ball adapted to be deployed in the well to lodge in the seat. The ball includes an outer shell that forms a spherical surface. The outer shell forms an enclosed volume therein, and the outer shell is formed from a metallic material.
Abstract:
A disconnect apparatus includes a lower housing, an upper housing having a collet mechanism configured to couple the upper housing to the lower housing, a retainer sleeve disposed within the upper housing and/or the lower housing, the retainer sleeve configured to move longitudinally within the lower housing and/or the upper housing between a first position and a second position in response to a pressure differential applied across the retainer sleeve; wherein in the first position at least a portion of the retainer sleeve is disposed radially inward of the collet mechanism and in the second position the retainer sleeve is disposed axially above or below the collet mechanism, and a biasing mechanism coupled to an end of the retainer sleeve. A method of disconnecting a tool from a tubular string includes applying a differential pressure across a sleeve and disengaging a collet mechanism with a housing.
Abstract:
A mechanical counting device for actuating a plurality of output devices, the device comprising: linear indexing means adapted to count a plurality of actuating signals and to cause actuation of the output devices when a predetermined number of actuating signals for each output device has been received, wherein the mechanical counting device is adapted to cause actuation of a particular output device when a different predetermined number of actuating signals has been received such that the output devices are sequentially actuable.
Abstract:
A friction reduction assembly for a downhole tubular. The friction reduction assembly includes an electrically activated friction reduction sub. The sub includes a flowbore fluidically connected to a flowbore of the tubular and remaining open for fluid flow therethrough during both activated and non-activated states of the friction reduction sub. A friction reducer responsive to an indication of lockup of the tubular, wherein friction between the tubular and surrounding casing or borehole is reduced in an electrically activated state of the friction reduction sub. A method of reducing friction in a downhole tubular is also included.
Abstract:
A hydraulic disconnect apparatus is disclosed for disconnecting a pipe string or coiled tubing string from a bottom hole assembly for drilling, work over, or plug and abandonment of oil and gas wells. Disconnection is accomplished by pumping a circulation ball from surface through the pipe or coiled tubing string until it lands on a seat inside the apparatus. Fluid pressure is then applied to shift a piston assembly within the apparatus, thereby allowing a series of balls to retract. The upper and lower portions of the apparatus can then be separated by applying a tensile force to the upper portion.
Abstract:
A tool for forming an obstruction in the production casing of an oil or gas well includes a sleeve adapted to be secured to the casing and having an annular abutting surface that captures a body or a cage having a solid body within the casing thereby forming an obstruction. The tool may be secured within the well either by an expandable sleeve or a collet having resilient fingers. The tool may be used as a plug to prevent flow through the production casing of the well in a well treatment process such as fracing. A process for treating a well using the tool is also presented.
Abstract:
A downhole setting tool comprises a tool housing and a hollow mandrel, the mandrel being situated in the housing. The tool further comprises a piston situated between the mandrel and the tool housing and a collar situated between the mandrel and the tool housing, wherein the tool housing, the mandrel, the piston and the collar define an annulus. The tool further comprises a first valve, wherein in a closed position the first valve blocks a path of fluid communication between the interior of the mandrel and the annulus.
Abstract:
A bottom hole assembly (BHA), adapted to be positioned in a casing and to isolate a portion of a wellbore, which includes a packer assembly with a first sealing element extending between first and second portions of the packer assembly. A method of setting a BHA in a casing which includes increasing a BHA pressure to activate an anchor assembly, applying a mechanical force to mechanically deform a first sealing element to thereby establish an initial seal between the first sealing element and an interior surface of the casing, and increasing a pressure in a space between the BHA and the casing and in a cavity within the BHA to increase a differential pressure across the first sealing element and thereby establish a pressure-energized seal between the first sealing element and the interior surface of the casing.
