Abstract: The present disclosure describes methods of treating fibrous cellulosic materials with sucrose fatty acid ester containing particles (carrier systems) that allow for modifications of surfaces, including making such surfaces water resistance and/or oil/grease resistance. The methods as disclosed provide combining at least one saccharide fatty acid esters (SFAE) with a polymer (e.g., latexes) to form micellular particles and applying such particles to substrates including fibrous cellulose-based materials (e.g., pulp) to form, inter alia, molded products. Compositions comprising combinations of SFAE, a latex and optionally a mineral or other additives are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method of preparing a sizing boost additive, includes: I) combining a lignin oil and an aqueous solution of gelatinized cationic polysaccharide to obtain a lignin/polysaccharide blend, wherein the lignin oil is obtained by base catalyzed depolymerization of lignin; and the gelatinized cationic polysaccharide is prepared by cooking dry cationic polysaccharide in water until completely gelatinized; and wherein a weight ratio of lignin oil:polysaccharide in the blend is 1:0.5-2, where the weight of the polysaccharide is the weight of dry polysaccharide added in preparation of the aqueous solution of gelatinized cationic polysaccharide; and the combined weight of lignin and polysaccharide is 1-10 wt-% based on the total weight of the resulting blend; followed by II) mixing the lignin/polysaccharide blend at a temperature of 40-100° C., until the blend has changed color from grey-white to brown.

Abstract: Cellulosic materials modified with a surface modifier to promote compatibility with a hydrophobic material and methods for producing surface-modified cellulosic materials are provided. The methods include providing a slurry of a cellulosic material and adding a surface modifier to the slurry. The surface modifier may be added to the slurry in a soluble form and precipitated by adjusting the pH. The surface-modified cellulosic material may be solvent-dried and/or dried using conventional drying methods to enhance hydrophobicity. To solvent-dry the surface-modified cellulosic material, a solvent is added to an aqueous slurry of the surface-modified cellulosic material to form an azeotrope. The azeotrope has a boiling point that is less than the boiling point of the solvent. The slurry is distilled to remove the azeotrope from the surface-modified cellulose material. The solvent is removed from the surface-modified cellulose material.

Abstract: The invention provides a creped tissue web having satisfactory softness without the excess use of water insoluble creping compositions. The satisfactory softness levels, which may be measured as TS7, are generally less than about 10.0 and may be achieved by creping the tissue web with less than about 100 mg/m2 (milligrams of creping composition per square meter of creping cylinder surface area) such as from about 25 to about 100 mg/m2 and more preferably from about 50 to about 75 mg/m2. It was previously believed that water insoluble creping compositions need to be added at high add-on levels, such as 100 mg/m2 or greater to achieve a desirable softness at a given tensile strength. It has now been surprisingly discovered that the add-on of water insoluble creping composition may be reduced significantly by adding a water soluble adhesive to the creping composition.
