    摘要: A passive optical network is provided that spectrally slices optical signals transmitted in both upstream and downstream directions utilizing wavelength division multiplexing routing. The passive optical network preferably includes a broadband optical signal source at both ends to provide signals that are spectrally sliced according to optical frequency. The downstream information may be transmitted in a conventional data format. The upstream transmissions may be segregated by subcarrier multiplexing, time scheduling or wavelength division multiplexing. At the subscriber end of the network there is an optical network unit which includes a device coupling the downstream fiber to the upstream fiber. Such coupling allows the passive optical network to perform enhanced diagnostic tests.

    摘要: An optical cable television system provides a large channel capacity and uses shared resources, whereby the more expensive hardware is shared over a large number of customers so as to minimize the cost per customer. A video switch network is provided which minimizes the temptation of subscribers to pirate signals since pay per view or on demand signals are provided only upon request of someone within a node corresponding to a neighborhood. An on demand program center continuously plays programs, such as movies, at time-staggered starts such that any subscriber will have only very minimal delays before seeing a particular program which is requested. A tuneable optical filter is provided in order to switch video signals onto an optical fiber going to the node in a particular neighborhood. An arrangement uses in-fiber grating in order to remove and insert different optical frequencies. Local insertion of various program sources, such as local commercials, is accomplished effectively by making such insertion at a relatively high point in the video distribution chain. An interface arrangement to provide on demand video signals to telephone company twisted pair wires is utilized.

    摘要: A self-amplified communication system or network (SANE) is disclosed in which one or more regions of an amplifying medium are optically pumped by some or all light sources in the system. The light sources serve as both signal light beam sources and as pump sources providing pump light beams for the amplifying regions. The transmission medium may be an optical fiber, or may be a free-space or planar waveguide transmission medium. The amplifying medium may be in a fiber, waveguide or bulk geometry, and may be local to a pump source, remotely located in the system, or even distributed within the transmission medium. Fixed optical paths with or without transmission of some pump light through an optical amplifier are used. Network topology configurations may be provided, such as point-to-point, star, or ring arrangements. Communication uplinks and downlinks may operate at the same or different wavelengths; and gain may be provided for uplink, downlink, or both.
