Abstract:
An optical cable television system provides a large channel capacity and uses shared resources, whereby the more expensive hardware is shared over a large number of customers so as to minimize the cost per customer. A video switch network is provided which minimizes the temptation of subscribers to pirate signals since pay per view or on demand signals are provided only upon request of someone within a node corresponding to a neighborhood. An on demand program center continuously plays programs, such as movies, at time-staggered starts such that any subscriber will have only Very minimal delays before seeing a particular program which is requested. A tuneable optical filter is provided in order to switch video signals onto an optical fiber going to the node in a particular neighborhood. An arrangement uses in-fiber grating in order to remove and insert different optical frequencies. Local insertion of various program sources, such as local commercials, is accomplished effectively by making such insertion at a relatively high point in the video distribution chain. An interface arrangement to provide on demand video signals to telephone company twisted pair wires is utilized.
Abstract:
The use of a doped optical fiber amplifier enables the transmission of multi-channel AM-VSB television signals. An Erbium doped fiber amplifier is disclosed. The amplifier is also useful for reducing second order distortion products produced in an amplitude modulated subcarrier optical communication system. The amplifier may be used in a tree and branch structure optical fiber television network.
Abstract:
An in-fiber Bragg grating is used to flatten the gain slope of a fiber optical amplifier or optical fiber laser. The grating can be formed using photorefractive techniques, and is placed within a guided wave portion of a doped optical fiber. The grating is oriented at a nonperpendicular angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the fiber, and has an interaction wavelength that is selected to flatten the gain slope of the device by diverting excess spontaneous emission therefrom. The interaction wavelength is preferably selected to correspond to a wavelength at or near that at which the spontaneous emission produced by the fiber peaks.
Abstract:
An amplified signal source is provided for transmitting modulated information signals over a fiber optic communication link, which may have high fiber dispersion. A continuous wave laser produces an optical carrier at a wavelength .lambda..sub.1. The optical carrier is intensity modulated to provide a substantially chirp free output signal. The output signal is amplified in an optical amplifier and coupled for transmission over a link fiber that can have a minimum dispersion at a wavelength .lambda..sub.2 that is different than .lambda..sub.1. The nonzero gain slope of the optical amplifier does not significantly degrade the substantially chirp free output signal.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to optical amplifier systems which include optical add/drop multiplexing capabilities. The optical amplifier system includes a first optical circulator with at least three circulator ports. An optical transmission fiber optically communicates with the first circulator port for transporting a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical transmission signal. A section of optically amplifying rare-earth doped fiber amplifies the WDM optical transmission signal input to the first circulator port. A wavelength-selecting optical fiber including at least one in-fiber Bragg grating for selectively reflecting an optical signal of a particular wavelength from the WDM optical signal optically communicates with the second circulator port. The optical amplifier system further includes a second optical circulator with at least three optical circulator ports, one of which communicates with the wavelength-selecting optical fiber. Another of the optical ports optically communicates with an optical fiber transmitting optical signals to be added to the WDM optical transmission signal.
Abstract:
An unbalanced Mach Zehnder optical frequency discriminator is linearized to suppress third order nonlinear distortion. An optical carrier that is modulated in optical frequency is input to an unbalanced Mach Zehnder interferometer to discriminate RF information signals carried on the carrier. The Mach Zehnder interferometer has an adjustable operating point. The operating point is adjusted to a point where the output intensity of the Mach Zehnder interferometer is no more than about ten percent of its maximum value. In order to avoid problems with second order distortion, the optical carrier is modulated with RF signals that do not occupy more than a single octave. The operating point of the device can be adjusted by adjusting an electrical bias thereof, by adjusting the wavelength of the optical carrier, or by adjusting the temperature of the device.
Abstract:
A narrow bandwidth incoherent optical source is provided. A superluminescent source includes a gain medium having an input end and an output end. The input end of the gain medium is optically coupled to a reflector to cause spontaneous emissions within a predetermined band exiting the input of the gain medium to be reflected back into the medium. Spontaneous emissions outside of the predetermined band are lost. The gain medium can comprise a doped fiber, such as an Erbium doped fiber. An optical isolator prevents the superluminescent source from lasing. By providing a plurality of reflectors operating in different bands, the superluminescent source can generate a plurality of optical carriers.
