摘要:
A communications device includes a transmitter device having an optical source to generate an optical carrier signal, and a first modulator coupled to the optical source and to modulate the optical carrier signal with a radio frequency (RF) input signal, and an optical waveguide coupled to the transmitter device. The communications device includes a receiver device coupled to the optical waveguide and including a second modulator to further modulate the modulated optical carrier signal with a local oscillator (LO) signal, a frequency modulation-phase modulation (FM-PM) discriminator coupled to the second modulator and to convert the modulated optical carrier signal to an intensity modulated optical carrier signal based upon the LO signal, and an optical-to-electrical converter coupled to the FM-PM discriminator and to generate an intermediate frequency (IF) signal based upon the intensity modulated optical carrier signal.

An optical transport system has an optical transmitter and an optical receiver coupled to one another via an optical link having a plurality of transmission paths. The optical transmitter uses at least one of the transmission paths to transmit an optical-reference signal that enables the optical receiver to obtain (i) an optical local-oscillator signal that is phase- and frequency-locked to an optical-carrier frequency used by the transmitter for the generation of data-bearing optical signals and (ii) a clock signal that is phase- and frequency-locked to the clock signal used by the transmitter. The optical receiver then uses these signals to demodulate and decode the data-bearing optical signals in a manner that significantly reduces the complexity of digital signal processing compared to that in a comparably performing prior-art system. In various embodiments, a transmission path for the optical-reference signal can be established using any suitable dimension orthogonal to those occupied by the data-bearing signals, such as polarization, wavelength, or space.

The invention relates to an access network for exchanging communication signals between a transit network and at least one communication medium of a user. The communication medium is operatively connected to an exchange by means of an optical fiber connection for exchanging the communication signals, and the exchange is connected to the transit network. The fiber connection comprises at least one multimode fiber, which is bent over at least one first part of its length, in such a manner that the fiber comprises at least one complete winding in the first part thereof mainly for maintaining one or more modes of the communication signals into the fiber. Said modes have been selected from a group comprising the ground mode and one or more lower modes near the ground mode.

The present research relates to s a transmission frame structure supporting a data service and a circuit service of diverse bands in a Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) network. This research provides a transmission frame structure including a sync period, an async period, and a control period and provides a multiplexing apparatus that can add or extract a fixed length frame in the synch period of the transmission frame and add or extract a variable length frame in the async period, and a method for transmitting the transmission frame. The transmission frame structure includes a sync period for transmitting a fixed length frame; an async period for transmitting a variable length frame; and a control period for transmitting a control frame storing information for discriminating between the sync period and the async period. The technology of this research can be applied to a synchronous optical network system.

A wavelength-switching, mesh-based restoration method among a network of optical cross-connects (OXCs) is disclosed. The method is defined as "quasi-centralized" in that the network is first partitioned into a plurality of subnetworks, then a single "restoration controller" is defined for each separate subnetwork. The subnetwork partitioning is defined as being either "minimally overlapping", meaning that the OXCs are "clustered" in their network topology, with only a few links required to join the various, autonomous subnetworks, or "highly overlapping", meaning that the OXCs are defined as being included in more than one subnetwork. Each subnetwork restoration controller (SRC) includes a network graph and is therefore responsible for providing restoration around faults recognized in its own subnetwork.

A path couples a pair of optical fibers in an optical transmission system. The transmission system includes a plurality of optical amplifiers placed along the transmission line. Associated with these optical amplifiers are optical isolators that limit the flow of optical energy to a single direction. The path allows reflected or scattered light from one optical fiber after the optical isolator to be returned via the other optical fiber. This enables an OTDR device to obtain measurement information along the entire length of the fibers between optical isolators.

A method of connecting arrays of optical wavepaths is described employing externally located connector pads. After optically aligning the arrays to be connected, the connector pads are bonded to the arrays and then to each other. In the preferred embodiments, the pads, which typically are thin silicon wafers, and the arrays are metalized and then soldered together. The use of connector pads to connect arrays of optical transmission paths results in sturdy, stable connections. The technique is fast, simple and inexpensive, and is consistent with current alignment procedures. By using solder to secure the pads to the arrays and to each other, connections can be undone and then redone. Inasmuch as all connections are external to the optical paths, there is no deterioration of the optical connections with time.

An optical communication system uses adjustable dispersion compensating fibers to compensate for dispersion in system fibers. The amount of dispersion introduced by the dispersion compensating fibers is varied depending upon the amount of compensation required. The amount of compensation may be determined automatically and the amount of compensation introduced by the fibers may be adjusted automatically by a controller.
