    摘要: A charged particle propagation apparatus has a generator including a vacuum chamber with a gun therein for discharging a charged particle beam through a beam exit. A higher pressure region adjoins the vacuum chamber at the beam exit and is maintainable at a pressure greater than a pressure of the vacuum chamber. A plasma interface located at the beam exit includes a plasma channel having at least three electrode plates disposed between its first end and its second end. A control system is adapted to apply a sequence of electrical currents to the electrode plates, which cause at least one plasma to move from the first end to the second end of the plasma channel, thereby pumping down the beam exit, and, in use, the charged particle beam is propagated from the vacuum chamber through the, or each, plasma into the higher pressure region.

    摘要: The present invention relates to an electron accelerator which is employed for sterilizing packaging material and which is included as part of an aseptic packaging machine which is intitially sterilized by means of an oxidizing chemical sterilizing agent such as H.sub.2 O.sub.2 and steam. A "window" of an electron accelerator, which is covered by metallic window foil, includes a thin coating of glass disposed on the window foil. The glass coating protects the window foil against chemical action such as oxidation resulting from the chemical sterilizing agent H.sub.2 O.sub.2.

The distance between the electron beam gun and the surface of the workpiece is made greater than the mean free path of gas molecules and metal vapor molecules generated in treating, e.g., 1.85 m. Two focusing coils are arranged to prevent the expansion of the electron beams.

    摘要: There is disclosed a method and apparatus for mining and excavating through rocky terrain without a mechanical tool or machine which must be made rugged enough to withstand the forces and impacts necessary to break rocks. The excavation is carried out with an electron beam which is projected against the rock. The beam is conducted from a generator through a long tube, which may be 20 feet long or more, and is emitted at the end of the tube. The generator and tube may be mounted on the turret of a vehicle so that the tube can swing in an arc of large angle in the plane of a rocky seam or at any angle transverse to this plane. The beam bores an opening in which the vehicle moves which may be in the direction of and/or at an angle to the beam. There is also disclosed excavating apparatus, for example an auger, including a beam generator for breaking up the terrain in which the excavation takes place ahead of the pick-up edge of the auger.

    摘要: Electron-beam welding apparatus, particularly for welding work in the atmosphere outside of the vacuum chamber 33 (FIG. 1 in which the electron-beam is generated, which includes facilities for producing X-rays for monitoring of the welds. Such X-rays are produced by projecting the electron beam which serves for welding on an X-ray target 61 at intervals (FIGS. 2, 2A) during the welding operation or during an interval following the welding (FIG. 1); the X-rays may also be produced by deflecting the welding electron beam at intervals on the target (FIG. 5) or by an auxiliary beam generated within the same container as the welding beam (FIG. 4). Where there is an auxiliary beam, the Xray monitoring of the weld may take place continuously as the welding progresses. A method of welding with an electron beam in which the welds are monitored by radiographic analysis while the welding is progressing. An X-ray generator 171 (FIG. 6) in which an electron beam E, which is projected outside of the vacuum chamber in which the electron-beam is generated, produces X-rays by impinging on a consumable target 191 preferably of relatively small dimensions.

    摘要: The invention relates to apparatus for bringing an electron beam outside the high vacuum chamber of its electron gun to direct the same onto a workpiece. The apparatus comprises beam aligning means, a visual optical system, at least one buffer vacuum chamber, means for surrounding the beam with a shield gas, and pumping mans individual to each chamber for individual pumping of them. The high vacuum chamber and buffer chamber have pyrex windows disposed within the field of view of the optical system. The high vacuum and buffer chambers also have aligned flow limiting orifices drilled in the said windows for passing the beam from the high vacuum chamber to the workpiece, one of the orifices interconnecting the two chambers and the other orifice being the exit orifice adjacent the workpiece.
