A cylindrical coffer dam assembly is described for use in temporary shielding personnel from nuclear reactor stored internals' radiation. The coffer dam is made up of substantially equal segments small enough to pass through the equipment hatch of the reactor containment building. The segments are pre-fabricated at a factory, transported to the plant, introduced individually into the containment building, and assembled together in sealing relation at the operating floor into a complete coffer dam. The coffer dam is moved to the reactor vessel and connected to the reactor vessel upper flange in sealing relation. The coffer dam can be disconnected, disassembled, removed and re-used at other nuclear reactors.

An installation for mounting extensible rings and comprising a tool for inserting a ring up to the collar of an enclosure at the extremity of a passageway which provides access to said enclosure and for producing the movement of extension of the ring against the collar. The tool comprises a tubular frame which can be temporarily fixed in a predetermined position within the passageway and two concentric tubular elements placed within the frame, said elements being displaceable by two actuating devices. One device produces the simultaneous and axial displacement of both tubular elements within the tubular frame. The other device produces the axial displacement of one tubular element with respect to the other in combination with gripping members which are carried by one of the tubular elements, said gripping members being moved in a substantially radial direction as a result of the relative axial displacements of the two tubular elements.

The drums (13a, 13b) of a first winch (12) are each arranged opposite a drum of the second winch (12') in relation to the axis of the channel (3). The device comprises two cables (15a, 15b) which are common to two drums located opposite one another around the body (2). The cables (15a, 15b) are wound with their end part on the drums located opposite one another and on their run between the drums pass over deflecting pulleys (16a, 16b), the axis of which is stationary, and over load-supporting pulleys (34a, 34b), the axis of which is movable and accompanies the load. The device ensures that the load is held and displaced in the event of a failure of one of the motor assemblies (14) and in the event of a break of one of the cables. The device can be used particularly for ensuring the lifting of a fuel assembly in a flask for handling the fuel assembly.

An axially movable tubular connector assembly component of a charging machine for a reactor adapted to be located on and movable over a platform of the reactor into alignment with, and for connection to, the ends of individual stand pipes for the purpose of exchanging fuel or moderator components which are introduced into the core of the reactor through the stand pipes. The connector assembly includes a cylinder, an annular piston slidable into and out of one end of the cylinder and a cylindric open-ended bellows unit located within and secured at one end to the piston crown. Pressurized fluid admitted into an annular chamber formed within the cylinder between the bellows unit and the surrounding piston and cylinder wall serves to extend the bellows unit and advance the piston so as to seat the annular crown onto the end of the stand pipe thereby to establish a charging passageway for the stand pipe leading through the openended bellows unit and the other end of the cylinder into the interior of the charging machine. The piston can be unseated by depressurizing the annular chamber and applying a driving force to the piston in the opposite direction.
