Abstract: Systems and methods for monitoring a throughway using a radio frequency identification (RFID) detection system. The RFID detection system includes (i) an image sensor configured to have a field of view directed towards a lane of the throughway; (ii) an RFID transceiver arrangement configured to interrogate RFID tags disposed on vehicles within the lane of the throughway; and (iv) a controller operatively connected to the image sensor and the RFID transceiver arrangement. The controller is configured to (1) cause the image sensor to capture a frame of image data representative of the lane of the throughway; (2) analyze the frame of image data to detect a presence of a vehicle in the lane of the throughway; (3) based on the analysis, determine a position of the vehicle relative to the RFID transceiver arrangement; and (4) configure an antenna array to generate a beam directed at the position of the vehicle.

Abstract: A system is described for tracking vehicle position using a smart phone or similar device as an active transponder that communicates with roadside equipment. The system may use existing RF transceivers on the smart-phone, such as Bluetooth® LE or WiFi to periodically transmit an identifying message. Road-based equipment detects and locates the smart phone. In a further aspect, the smart phone is alerted by roadside beacons and responds with identification information. Transaction processing may be performed either on the smart phone or by roadside or back office equipment. The system may be used for automated roadway tolling and monitoring and also for access control. A coded card may be scanned by the smart card to enter identification for access control.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for road usage charging (RUC) are described. RUC computation may be performed at a vehicle using a vehicle computing device (VCD) that is trusted by a service provider, charger, or both. The VCD may be trusted to collect high accuracy, high resolution time and location data for RUC, and also compute for itself what the RUC charge is according to one or more applicable charge policies that are provided to the VCD. Anonymity related to specific vehicle and location information may be provided by encrypting portions of RUC data that are decryptable by different entities with reduced likelihood of revealing specific vehicle, location, and time information.
