The ignition system may have an igniter connected to selectively ignite a fuel mixture within the engine, an injector located to inject a non-combustible gas into the engine, and a controller in communication with the igniter and the injector. The controller may be configured to energize the igniter during a first mode of engine operation to ignite the fuel mixture, and cease energizing the igniter during a second mode of engine operation. The controller may also be configured to actuate the injector during the second mode of engine operation to promote auto-ignition of the fuel mixture.

The invention provides an internal combustion engine having a decompression device, wherein the decompression device includes a pressure reducing valve, a recoil starter, and a decompression working mechanism. The decompression working mechanism works in association with the motion of the recoil starter means, for opening and closing the pressure reducing valve. An internal combustion engine comprising a piston (1) having a recessed combustion bowl (3) with a raised projection (4) in the floor of the bowl so as to define an annulus with the sides of the bowl, swirl means to cause the inlet air to rotate about said raised projection, and a fuel injector (2) having orifices that spray a plurality of jets into the annulus at spaced points around the projection (4), the cross-sectional area of the annulus being such as to vary around the projection (4) and to have a minimum value in a median plane (D--D) through the axis (C) of the projection (4), and the injector nozzle (2) being located in a central region of the bowl (3) and having orifices orientated so as to direct jets of fuel both sides of said median plane. The cross-section area of the annulus is varied by varying the radial width of the annulus, this being achieved conveniently in a circular bowl by offsetting the axis (C) of the projection (4) radially from the axis of the bowl (A). Both axes then lie on the median plane (D--D) through the narrowest part of the annulus. The injector nozzle (2) is also located along the median plane (D--D) and directs fuel jets into the four quadrants of the annulus defined by the median plane (D--D) and perpendicular plane (E--E) through the axis (A) of the bowl (3).

This invention relates to a compressed air starter including pneumatically operating starting valves for diesel engines, wherein one main starting valve is connected to the cylinder head of the engine and is provided with a valve body, which co-operates with a valve seat in order to alternately open and close an inlet opening for compressed air to one cylinder, whereby during the start up of the engine, starting air (compressed air) continuously is supplied to the main starting valve, said valve body including one servo piston, which is controlled by servo air from a supply of servo air, which servo air acts on the servo piston during moments related to the working phase of the engine.The invention simplifies the pipe arrangement for the compressed air in a diesel engine with several cylinders where there is usually arranged a main distributor for distributing the servo or pilot air, which controls the starting valves. The invention utilizes a magnetic valve (17), which is connected to the main starting valve (8,9,10) and has a valve slide, which in one position (I-II) connects the supply (16) of servo air with a compression face of the servo valve (10), said servo valve thereby being activated to drive the valve body (8,9) to the opening position and, in a second position (II-III) controls the outlet from the supply (16) of servo air so that the servo piston drives the valve body (8,9) to a closing position, said magnetic valve (17) being controlled by electric signals from a transmitter (20) controlled by the crank shaft or by a second shaft (22) rotating in accordance with the working phase of the engine.

An air/fuel ratio controller for an engine determines a hot restart condition by comparing the prior engine shutdown temperature with a predetermined constant and with the engine startup temperature. If the prior engine shutdown temperature exceeds the predetermined constant and the difference between the engine shutdown temperature and the engine startup temperature is within a predetermined value, a hot restart condition is indicated and the open loop air/fuel ratio otherwise determined in accord with engine operating parameters is adjusted to provide for improved hot restart engine performance.

Associated with the fuel controller of a supercharged diesel engine is a mechanism which limits the maximum fuel quantity in all operational states as defined by engine speed and air flow rate. This mechanism includes a three dimensional cam, displaced in rotation by a first transducer responsive to rpm or air flow rate and further displaced axially by a second transducer responsive to the other of these variables. A cam follower attached to the main fuel control rod of the controller makes contact with and follows the surface of the cam, thereby limiting the maximum fuel quantity admitted to the engine. Special provisions permit an enlarged starting fuel quantity and also permit corrections on the basis of further parameters, such as temperature. Several embodiments are presented.
