A fuel system, such as for use in an aircraft, comprises a main pump, a servo pump, a modulating valve, a shut-off valve, an actuator and a pump sharing valve. The main pump and the servo pump receive fuel from a source. The metering valve receives main flow from the main pump. The shut-off valve receives fuel flow from the metering valve. The actuator receives fuel flow from the servo pump. The pump sharing valve receives circulating flow from the servo pump and alternatively directs shared flow to the main flow or an inlet of the servo pump. The pump sharing valve also sends main pump flow to supplement the servo pump during shutdown conditions.

An adjustment mechanism for allowing fine-tuning the amount of fuel to a Diesel engine by an operator of the engine is provided. A module conveniently within reach of the operator of the engine allows the operator to tune the engine independent of any throttle setting while the engine is operating. In one embodiment for an electronically controlled Diesel engine, an electrical input representative of barometric pressure to an electronic engine controller is modified to be under control of the operator, who can adjust the input independent of the throttle to vary injected quantities of fuel according to the instant conditions under which the engine is operating.

The pump control module controls a first pump to deliver fuel from a fuel tank to a second pump through a fuel line. The pump control module controls the second pump to pressurize fuel from the fuel line and to deliver the pressurized fuel to a fuel rail. The fuel vaporization module determines whether fuel at an inlet of the second pump is vaporizing based on an engine operating condition. The pump control module increases an output of the first pump when fuel at the inlet of the second pump is vaporizing.

The elements are movable by discrete centrifugal governors on a shaft which is driven by the camshaft as a function of the RPM of the engine. The elements are further movable by additional moving devices in dependency on changes of other engine parameters. Fuel injection devices are used for injecting fuel into the combustion chambers of compression ignition engines. It is desirable to isolate the mechanical drive for fuel injection timing from the flow path of high pressure fuel to minimize the seepage of fuel into the fluid lubricating the mechanical drive while using only one speed responsive device for both the timing and governing functions. The subject fuel injection apparatus includes a planetary gear arrangement having a ring gear to change the timing phase relationship between a distributor rotor and a delivery passage which communicates the pump section with the rotor. A metering collar is adapted to meter the quantity of fuel delivered by the rotor to the outlet ports. Both the ring gear and the metering collar are mechanically connected to an element of a single flyweight assembly. The metering collar is widely spaced from the planetary gear arrangement to minimize the leakage of fuel into the lubricating fluid.

There is disclosed a speed control system for a diesel-powered vehicle in which a sensing element responsive to the speed of the vehicle or engine, preferably responsive to the vehicle speed, is connected through control means to close the fuel supply to the diesel engine, thereby permitting a preset limitation on vehicle and/or engine speed. The control system is designed as a retrofit to existing diesel engines and utilizes conventional elements such as the shut down lever of these engines, thereby avoiding any significant engine alterations or modifications.
