A novel laminar flow nozzle for fuel injected racing cars is described herein. One novel feature comprises a narrow angle between converging conduit component channels. These channels, in turn, supply vaporized fuel and nitrous oxide to the main chamber of the nozzle. Another important novel feature is the integral structure of the nozzle; the conduit components, generally rigid and cylindrical in shape, are physical integral components of the nozzle. The result of our invention is a nozzle with a smooth laminar flow of gases which results in less turbulence and greater horsepower.

A fuel injection system (10) having a unique injector (226) cooperating with a unique pump (228) for blowing fuel into the combustion chamber (20) of a diesel engine (12). A reciprocating valve (202) and diaphragm (196) in the pump assembly (174) cooperate to periodically discharge vapor, such as compressed air or steam, and fuel to the injector (26). The vapor drives a piston assembly (32) and a valve assembly (36) to admit high-pressure vapor to a mixing chamber (124). Fuel is simultaneously supplied through a fuel valve assembly (130) to a fuel distribution ring (134) in the mixing chamber (124). The high-pressure vapor or gases blow the fuel from the mixing chamber (124) into the combustion chamber (20). Alternatively, the high-pressure vapor is replaced with a combustion product from a combustion chamber (257) formed in the injector (253). Combustion fuel is supplied through an intake valve (321) and excess gases are exhausted through exhaust valve (323). Pressure from combustion gases in the chamber (257) drives the piston assembly (267) and valve assembly (271). Vapor pressure from the combustion gases also blows the fuel into the cylinder.

This invention relates to a two-stroke, spark ignition, internal combustion engine, with two, three, four or six cylinders. Fuel injection is provided by means of combustion gases and no fuel pump is employed. The working spaces of the engine cylinders are interconnected by means of ducts in such a manner that during the working stroke a small amount of high pressure combustion gases enters the working space. After the duct port is uncovered by the piston the combustion gases are carried over on their way by a predetermined amount of fuel, thereby effecting the injection.

A compression ignition internal combustion engine in which the temperature and pressure in the combustion chamber are increased to self-ignite an air-fuel mixture with the compressive operation of a piston after closing of the intake valve. An ECU [1] controls injection timing of the pressurized air depending on the ignition timing. Self-ignition timing can be controlled to a proper timing in a wide engine operating range with respect to a load and a revolution speed without substantially changing the shape of the combustion chamber.

Liquid fuel and water pressurized by fuel and water pumps are forced into aaporizer which is heated by hot exhaust gases of a piston engine. The resulting vapor mixture is blown into the combustion chamber of a cylinder head of the engine at a speed up to that of sound near the end of the engine's compression stroke where it mixed with precompressed air. The resulting explosive mixture is ignited by self-ignition or by spark plug and the water vapor content mixed with the fuel vapor lowers the combustion temperature, resulting in a significant reduction of nitrogen oxide content in the exhaust gases. The ratio of water vapor to fuel vapor is preferably 1:1 to 3:1 and the temperature at which the vapor mixture is introduced into the cylinder is above the dew point of the fuel in the fuel vapor and water vapor mixture. The mixture of fuel with air is approximately stoichiometric. Diesel oil is useable, and also such bio-mass fuels as vegetable oils.

Method and apparatus for fuel injection to an internal combustion engine is disclosed. Gas is supplied to a fuel holding chamber to maintain a reference pressure which is above atmospheric pressure in the fuel holding chamber. A metered quantity of fuel is delivered into the holding chamber against the reference pressure. Communication is established between the holding chamber and the engine, and the supply of gas to the holding chamber is maintained while the communication exists so the pressure of the gas is sufficient to displace the metered quantity of fuel from the holding chamber to the engine.
