Suitable cationic additives (e.g., phosphonium, phosphazene, quaternary ammonium, guanidinium, pyridinium, arsonium, etc.) are disclosed for lowering the decomposition temperature of polymer compositions. The invention further provides methods of preparing such polymer compositions with tunable decomposition temperatures.

The film-forming composition is one for forming a protective film which in the diffusion of an impurity into a silicon wafer, serves to partly prevent the impurity diffusion. This film-forming composition comprises a high-molecular silicon compound and a compound having a protective element which undergoes covalent bonding to the element to be diffused in the impurity diffusion and thereby comes to have eight valence electrons. The protective element is preferably gallium or aluminum when phosphorus is used as the element to be diffused, and is preferably tantalum, niobium, arsenic, or antimony when boron is used as the diffusion element.

Composition of an antimicrobial agent and an antioxidant having improved antimicrobial activity compared to the antimicrobial agent alone. The preferred environment of the invention is a composition of a thermoplastic resin, an antioxidant, and an antimicrobial agent, the latter two being compatible with the resin. The resin composition can contain other usual additives, and can be melt processed at an elevated temperature to form articles such as films or fibers having improved antimicrobial activity. A method for improving the efficacy of an antimicrobial agent by combining it with an antioxidant is disclosed. A method for melt-processing a resin composition containing an antimicrobial material is also disclosed, wherein the resin composition includes an antioxidant. The inventors have thus discovered and solved the problem of oxidation of an antimicrobial composition, particularly a resin composition containing an antimicrobial agent, which arises when the composition is processed at elevated temperatures, as are typically encountered when forming a fiber or film of the composition.

Included are halogenated phosphate-phosphites and their acid halides and acids. The halogenated phosphate-phosphites can be prepared by a process comprising serially contacting(A) a phosphorus trihalide with a triol;(B) a halogenating agent; and(C) an oxirane or an alcohol,under conditions sufficient to prepare the halogenated phosphate-phosphite. Steps (A) and (B) can prepare their acid halides. Use of water in step (C) can prepare their acids. For example, 3-((bis(2-chloroethoxy)phosphino)oxy)(2-bromomethyl-2-methylpropyl, 2-bromoethyl, 2-chloroethyl)-phosphorate can be prepared from 2-methyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol; phosphorus trichloride; bromine; and ethylene oxide.Also included is use of the compounds as a hydraulic fluid or flame retardant. For example, polyurethanes can be rendered less flammable with the halogenated phosphate-phosphite flame retardant.
