The present invention relates to novel combined laundry detergent, bleach, and antimicrobial composition incorporating novel sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid compounds, and methods for making and using them. The sulfoperoxycarboxylic compounds used in compositions of the invention are storage stable, water soluble and have low to no odor. Compositions of the invention may be in the form of a liquid, a solid, or a gel. The sulfoperoxycarboxylic compounds useful in preparing compositions of the present invention can be formed from non-petroleum based renewable materials.

##STR1## The invention concerns diacylated dipercarboxylic acids according to general formula (I), in which R 1 and R 2 are hydrocarbon groups having from 1 to 15 carbon atoms, and X is electron attracting by being an optionally substituted phenyl group, an optionally substituted heterocycle in which the hetero atom is positioned so that from 2 to 4 carbon atoms are present between the hetero atom and each one of the carbonyl carbons of the diperacid, or by comprising at least one electron attracting functional group positioned so that a carbon chain having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms is present between said electron attracting group and each one of the carbonyl carbons of the diperacid, wherein the electron attracting group contains oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, halogen, optionally substituted phenyl, or at least two conjugated double bonds, R 1 and R 2 are hydrocarbon groups having from 1 to 15 carbon atoms, except compounds in which X consists of a phenyl group having the carbonyl carbons in 1,4 position and both of R 1 and R 2 are acetyl or both of R 1 and R 2 are nonyl. Novel sulfonated phenyl esters of dicarboxylic acids are useful as diperoxyacid precursors in bleaching and laundering applications when combined with a source of peroxide. These diperoxyacid precursors can be produced by reacting a dicarboxylic acid, a phenol sulfonate, and a lower alkyl acid anhydride in an alkyl hydrocarbon solvent and removing a carboxylic acid byproduct through distillation. The diperoxyacid precursors have the structure: ##STR1## wherein n is an integer from about 4 to about 18 and M is an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, or ammonium. The diperoxyacid precursors have a high perhydrolysis profile coupled with a relatively low-to-moderate hydrolysis profile.

The invention relates to a novel process for synthesizing surface active peroxyacid bleaching agents and compositions which are named .alpha. or .beta. alkyl monoperoxysuccinic acids and have the general structure ##STR1## wherein R is an unsubstituted or substituted straight chain alkyl of 6 to 16 carbon atoms, unsubstituted or substituted branched chain alkyl of 6 to 20 carbon atoms, or a phenyl group substituted with one or more of H, alkyl of 1 to 14 carbon atoms, F, Cl, NO.sub.3, OSO.sub.3 M, SO.sub.3 M, or COOM, and M is further defined as H, an alkali metal or ammonium cation.The invention provides a novel process for synthesizing these alkyl monoperoxysuccinic acids which is relatively inexpensive, high yielding, and safe.The bleaching compositions are useful for bleaching fabrics and other laundering purposes. The bleaching compositions of the invention may also contain peroxyacid stabilizers, builders, fillers, and surfactants.
