The present disclosure provides optical fibers with an impact-resistant coating system. The fibers feature low attenuation. The coating system includes a primary coating and a secondary coating. The primary coating and secondary coating have reduced thickness to provide low-diameter fibers without sacrificing protection. The primary coating has high tear strength and is resistant to damage caused by mechanical force. The secondary coating has high puncture resistance. The outer diameter of the optical fiber is less than or equal to 190 μm.

The present invention provides a surface-modified glass fiber film having its surface modified by a silicon-containing compound, and a value of a common flexural rigidity of the surface-modified glass fiber film as measured by the method described in JIS R 3420 is in the range of 3 to 100 times as compared to a value of the common flexural rigidity of an unmodified glass fiber film.There can be provided a surface-modified glass fiber film having a high strength, a high heat resistance, a good dimensional stability, a good self-supporting property, a low average linear expansion coefficient, a high storage rigidity at high temperature, and an excellent surface uniformity.

The present invention concerns an optical fibre comprising: an optical waveguide comprising a glass core surrounded by a glass cladding; a coating surrounding said optical waveguide comprising a cured polymer material comprising a polyester obtained by esterification of: a reactant A selected from an acid, a triglyceride, or a mixture of triglycerides having a C16-C24 aliphatic chain comprising at least two conjugated double bonds; and a polyol made of at least one monomer comprising at least 3 hydroxyl groups, the polyol being thermally stable up to 300° C. (reactant B). The present invention concerns also the above said polyester coating, a method for coating an optical fibre with said polyester coating and a method for obtaining predetermined mechanical properties of a coating for an optical fibre. The cured polymer forming the coating can be prepared by curing the polyester of the invention either thermally or by radiation.

The invention further relates to methods of using or producing such a coherent growth substrate.

The present invention provides an optical fiber in which transmission loss is not easily increased when the optical fiber is dipped in water and then dried and also which has a solvent resistant property and a micro-bend resistant property. An optical fiber according to one embodiment of the present invention is an optical fiber in which at least two layers of coating resin coat the circumference of a glass optical fiber. When a Yang's modulus of the first coating layer of the coating resin is defined by PY (MPa) and an elution rate of the coating resin after dipping in 60° C. hot water for 168 hours is defined by E (mass·%), a formula of 1.8≦E≦8.61×PY+1.40 is satisfied.

A method for coating cloth especially fiberglass sheets with a thermosetting resin and resulting structure is provided. The coating is performed in two steps. In the first step, essentially all of the strands of the fiberglass are coated with the resin/solvent mixture while maintaining at least some of the interstices or openings essentially free of the solvent mixture. This first coating is then partially cured to between about 70% and 90% of full cure. The coated fiberglass with partially cured resin thereon is then given a second coating of either the same or different thermosetting resin mixture which coats the first coating and fills in the interstices between the fibers. This second coating is then partially cured, which advances the cure of the first coating past 80% full cure and results in an impregnated fiberglass cloth structure for use as sticker sheets. During lamination, the first coating acts like an impenetrable insulating sheet, preventing resin displacement and, therefore, preventing glass fiber contact with the conductive planes. The second coating is fluid enough to fill in spaces in the planes and to form the adhesive bond to cores and conductive layers. The structure reduces the tendency of the resin to flake and produce dust during subsequent processing operations.

This invention is addressed to the improvement in the bonding relationship between glass fibers and elastomeric materials with which the glass fibers are combined in the manufacture of glass fiber reinforced elastomeric products, wherein individual glass fibers are coated or bundles of glass fibers are impregnated with a composition containing a resorcinol-aldehyde resin component, an elastomer component and a terpolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. It has been found that the presence of the terpolymer significantly reduces the track of the treated glass fibers in the green or uncured state. The coated glass fibers may be subsequently treated with a dialkyl ester of phthalic acid.

Provided are materials that include one or more cycloaliphatic polyamides integrated into or coated onto one or more structural fibers such as polyethylene fibers, aramid-fibers, glass fibers or carbon fibers. The resulting materials may be incorporated into composite articles suitable for use as protective equipment or structural layers.
