Microporous sheets or molded articles, permeable to water vapor are prepared from sedimenting and redispersible aqueous polyurethanes. The dispersions are in microgel form, the particles having an average minimum diameter of from 2 to 500 microns, preferably 8 to 100 microns. A second component binds the microgel together without impairing the microporosity. The products of the invention are useful as artificial leather in the preparation of raincoats, handbags, belts, shoes, upholstery and also as vibration and sound-damping materials.

A process for producing foam-shaped pieces having a poreless and smooth surface from particulate expandable styrene polymer which comprises the steps of heating not prefoamed particles of expandable styrene polymer to a temperature between 100.degree. and 170.degree. C. under a pressure of between 3 and 30 bar to cause melting of the polymer cooling the melt polymer to temperatures of about 10.degree. to 40.degree. C. above the softening point of the styrene polymer, enlarging the capacity of the mold in which the particles are melted, expanding the resulting mold melt material without supplementary external delivery of heat and thereafter cooling the mold to about ambient temperature followed by removal of the shaped foamed piece.

A method of obtaining a micro-porous membrane is provided as well as the improved membrane. Said method is characterized in that a homogeneous paste is prepared from a pore-forming filler substance and a latex, and said paste, which is reduced to powder form, is dried and a membrane is formed therefrom and then (fritted) sintered, and the pore-forming filler substance is then removed. The membrane thus obtained is particularly useful as a diaphragm for electrolysis cells.

Polytetrafluoroethylene resin tubes having small pore size and high porosity are produced by a process which includes stretching the tubes by drawing using a metal die and a metal plug. By using the die and plug, the stress necessary for stretching is converted to a compressive force in the thickness direction of the tube. This compressive force is an essential factor in producing the microporous structure of the tubes. In addition, when stretching is performed by drawing, a ratio of thickness to inside diameter of the tube of 0.07 or less can be easily achieved.
