    摘要: A method for gas-supersaturating fluids, e.g., physiologic saline, includes providing a chamber having a first inlet to receive the fluid; a second inlet to receive a gas, e.g., oxygen, from a gas supply that maintains pressure within the chamber at a predetermined level, advantageously about 600 psi; and an outlet advantageously coupled to a capillary assembly. An atomizer nozzle coupled to the first inlet advantageously creates within the chamber fine droplets of fluid into which gas diffuses to create the gas-supersaturated fluid, which collects within the chamber below the atomizer nozzle for removal via the outlet.

    摘要: A peritoneal dialysis fluid used for a continuous recirculating peritoneal dialysis wherein the peritoneal dialysis fluid is infused into a peritoneal cavity of a patient and then, typically on a continuous process basis a portion of the dialysis fluid is sequentially drained from the cavity, cleansed through an extracorpreal dialyzer, and reinfused into the cavity. The dialysis fluid contains as an osmotic agent a substance which does not substantially permeate through pores of hollow fiber membrane of an extracorporeal dialyzer, preferably an osmotic agent having a molecular weight of about 20,000 to about 100,000. The supplemented amount of the osmotic agent is reduced or not needed during the dialysis.

    摘要: Heat exchanging contact of water and blood with a pleated metal bellow heat exchanging surface in a heat exchanger for an extracorporeal blood circuit is improved by so forming the pleats of the bellows that the fluid chamber inside each pleat continuously narrows from the mouth of the pleat toward the inner end of the chamber. Uniform water distribution along the bellows is accomplished by making the water manifold in the heat exchanger core much larger in cross section than the inlet fitting to the manifold.

    摘要: An artificial gut (100) comprises a first hollow fiber (203) having an inner surface (215) that is lined with at least a portion of a layer of one or more of a plurality of biological components (205) that typically line a mammalian gut. Further, a second hollow fiber (201) is adjacent the first hollow fiber. The layer of one or more of the plurality of biological components can consist essentially of enterocytes. The enterocyte-lined inner surface is perfused with a feeding solution containing nutrients, and the enterocytes absorb, process, and transport the nutrients across the wall of the first hollow fiber. The nutrients eventually diffuse into the second hollow fiber. A perfusate selected from the group consisting of culture medium, blood, and plasma, can perfuse an inner surface of the second hollow fiber, whereby the perfusate is nourished by the nutrients.

    摘要: A tubular set is provided for use with extracorporeal treatment of blood. The set comprises: a flow reversing valve having a patient arterial line and a patient venous line each separately connected to one side of the valve. A unit arterial line and a unit venous line are each separately connected to the other side of the valve. The patient arterial line connects with the unit arterial line in a first position of a valve, and the patient venous line connects with the unit venous line in the same first valve position. The patient arterial line connects with the patient venous line in a second position of a valve, while the patient venous line connects with the unit arterial line in the same second valve position. The flow reversing valve is movable between the first and second positions by relative rotation of part of the valve and adjacent portions of the respective lines.

    摘要: A blood treatment system has a housing formed of transparent plastic material configured so that substantially the entire blood flow path is visible. A generally planar blood filtration media assembly divides a blood treatment chamber within the housing into first and second interior spaces that are visible through the transparent housing, with a cardiotomy manifold in fluid communication with the first interior space and a venous blood inlet in fluid communication with the second interior space. A generally planar blood defoamer media assembly is provided generally parallel with and spaced apart from the blood filtration media assembly. The blood defoamer media assembly divides the second interior space from the blood storage chamber. The blood flow path along each side of the blood filtration media assembly and each side of the blood defoamer media assembly is visible.
