Abstract: A multipurpose medical scissor assembly having a first element and a second element arranged in a scissor configuration. The first element has a first blade support section and a first shank section. The second element has a second blade support section and a second shank section. A segment that mimics the shape of the second blade support section is mounted parallel to the second blade support section. Both the segment and the second blade support section terminate with hooked ends that create a forked configuration. The first element, the second element and the parallel segment are preferably all molded of plastic. Metal blades are attached to the first blade support section and to the second blade support section to provide cutting edges.

Abstract: Disclosed is an endoscopic stapler that can be operated through the small working channel of a laryngoscope, other rigid endoscope, or a natural orifice to safely and effectively connect tissues permanently or semi-permanently. The endoscopic stapler apparatus includes a handle including a trigger, an outer shaft coupled to the handle, and an inner shaft with prongs positioned at a distal end of the inner shaft. The endoscopic stapler further includes a hook, wherein the hook and prongs are positioned to capture a staple at a tip of the prongs, wherein a proximal end of the inner shaft is coupled to the trigger, and wherein activation of the trigger causes the prongs to translate away from the handle causing the prongs to bend and close the staple.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure include apparatuses for and methods of removing a ligation clip interconnecting two mitral valve leaflets. Methods can include providing a mitral valve having first and second valve leaflets interconnected with a ligation clip. The ligation clip includes a base supporting a first and second retaining arms each having an end opposite the base. The first and second valve leaflets are compressed between the first and second retaining arms. The methods further include physically separating the ligation clip from both of the first and second leaflets with the apparatus, which is configured to dislodge the first and second leaflets from the ligation clip. The apparatuses are further configured to withdraw the ligation clip from the patient along with the apparatus.

Abstract: A surgical device comprising a first clamping member, a second clamping member, an electric motor, and a control system is disclosed. The electric motor is configured to drive at least one of the first clamping member and the second clamping member toward a predetermined tissue gap between the first clamping member and the second clamping member to clamp the tissue of a patient. The control system is configured to monitor a parameter of the electric motor. The parameter is indicative of a clamping force exerted to the tissue by the first clamping member and the second clamping member. The control system is further configured to control the electric motor based on the parameter to limit the clamping force to a predetermined maximum limit.

Abstract: Provided is a device for extracting from a body tissue surgical fasteners having a crown, a baseplate and prongs extending from the crown to the baseplate. The device includes a shaft having a lumen with a cross-sectional shape and dimensions to allow the crown to enter the lumen while preventing the baseplate from entering the lumen. Also provided is a method for extracting from a body tissue a fastener having a crown, a baseplate and prongs extending from the crown to the baseplate. According to the method of the invention, the crown of a fastener is introduced into the hollow portion of the device of the invention while preventing the advancement of the baseplate by the distal part of the hollow shaft.

Abstract: A surgical method for loading ligament grafts into a joint. A longitudinal socket formed in a bone is intersected by a transverse pin. A flexible strand is drawn with the pin through the bone. A looped portion of the strand is diverted so as to protrude out of the entrance to the longitudinal socket. The ends of the strand remaining accessible on either side of the bone. The ligament graft is captured within the strand loop protruding from the entrance to the socket. The strand is retracted into the socket, drawing the graft into the socket by pulling on the accessible ends of the flexible strand. The graft is fixed in the socket using a transverse implant.
