The present invention is based in part upon the discovery that the use of pyruvate in enteral formulations, in combination with an anabolic protein composition, produces a synergistic effect in increasing the lean body mass or muscle tissue of a mammal consuming same. The present invention also provides a method for increasing fat loss or decreasing the percent body fat in a mammal through the administration of an anabolic protein composition. The present invention relates generally to a composition for enhancing the protein concentration or muscle mass of a mammal and a method for enhancing the protein concentration or muscle mass in a mammal. More specifically, the present invention relates to a composition which comprises an anabolic protein composition and optionally pyruvate and/or derivatives thereof. The compositions according to the invention can take the form of powders, liquids, pills, capsules, tablets, food additives, candies or confections.

An enzymatic synthesis and composition of &agr;-hydroxy carboxylic acid and &agr;-amino acid or peptide co-oligomers is disclosed wherein a residue of the &agr;-hydroxy carboxylic acid is linked to a residue of the &agr;-amino acid or peptide by an amide linkage. Proteolytic enzyme papain catalyzes co-oligomerization of the &agr;-hydroxy carboxylic acid and &agr;-amino acid. The degree and distribution of oligomerization varies upon the type and concentrations of different reaction mixtures utilized and upon the length of allowed reaction time. The resultant oligomers may be provided to ruminants as bioavailable amino acid supplements that are resistant to degradation in the rumen.

A fat-rich powder provides the complete nutritional needs of an at-risk infant no more than one year old, who has acquired a milk allergy, such as cow's milk allergy (“CMA”), and/or an allergy to protein in “soy milk”, as well as digestive or absorption problems resulting in a damaged gut. Because such an infant must derive all its protein from amino acids it is not fed any ingredient derived from mammalian milk, but a combination of amino acids with nucleotides in specified amounts along with free L-glutamine, maintaining specified ratios of their relative amounts, which ratios in the ranges stated are found to be beneficial for healing of the infant's damaged gut, and for promoting cell division to assure its normal growth. A typical feeding of 32.6 gm of the powder delivers 160 cals; the powder, including triglycerides of relatively long chain fatty acids which contribute about 50% of the total caloric content of the powder, is nevertheless solubilized when the powder is manually shaken at 35° C. in a bottle containing 240 ml (8 fl oz) of water.

A protein composition and a baby food (infant formula) containing this are provided. The protein composition is characterised in that it contains at least 15 wt % (based on the total amount of the proteins) modified proteins, the course of whose digestion is slowed compared to the unmodified, normal proteins serving as starting materials. Such a protein composition and a baby food containing this create just as good metabolic conditions for the normal development of a child as feeding with human milk proteins.
