Abstract:
A vending apparatus and system for storing and automatically dispensing magnetic or optical disks. A user interface means allows a user to enter a dispensing request corresponding to the selection of a desired disk and includes means for receiving user identification information, such as credit or debit card information, or other information stored magnetically on a bank card, driver's license, school identification card, or library card. Once a disk selection has been entered and user identification information received and verified, the selected disk is dispensed from the vending unit. The disks to be dispensed by the vending unit may be provided to have a region of magnetic recording media formed on one surface, and the vending unit may be equipped to write information relevant to the transaction onto the region of magnetic media.
Abstract:
An article gripper is moved by a robotic transporter in two perpendicular directions within a transport plane between a reference location and ID code reading locations aligned with an access port and storage cells of storage assemblies mounted in doors closing a transport compartment of an automatic vending machine. The gripper is also moved by the robotic transporter in a direction intersecting the transport plane to insert or withdraw articles carried by the gripper after displacement by incremental amounts from the aligned reading locations to gripping or releasing positions. The foregoing movements of the gripper as well as other related operations are under programmed control of a computer and inputted data from a keypad and card reader to perform merchandising transactions with respect to manufactured articles stored in the doors of the machine as well as to accommodate servicing operations.
Abstract:
Vending machine for vending re-usable articles, in response to patron's entering an identification code number, and depositing money. The articles are individually identified (films and video tapes) and of a value greater than the amount required for vending, and upon return by the patron, they are placed, by the machine, in pre-assigned cubicles. Sensing elements on the articles and in the machines assure that only authorized articles are put therein, and that the article is placed in properly oriented position. Credit is given the patron in response to his depositing money whether an article is delivered or not.

A terminal is provided at which a user can selectively preview or order a videocassette. The terminal comprises customer identification means for receiving information relative to the user; mode selection means enabling the user to choose a preview or order mode; cassette selection means for selecting and identifying a desired videocassette; terminal control means including a memory coupled to the customer identification means and the cassette selection means to receive and store information representative of the user, the data, and the selected videocassettes. Vending means are provided for storing a plurality of videocassettes and for selectively vending the selected videocassette; and vending control means are coupled to the terminal control means for communicating the information between the memory and the vending means to command the vending of the selected videocassette when the order mode has been selected. Preview display means coupled to the terminal control means receive the information and display a trailer corresponding to the selected videocassette when the preview mode has been selected.
Abstract:
A method for production of anthracene from phenanthrene is disclosed. Phenanthrene is hydrogenated at a nickel on a carrier catalyst at temperatures from about 140.degree. C. to 170.degree. C. under a pressure of from about 10 to 30 bar by gradual addition of hydrogen. The hydrogenation product is separated by distillation into sym.-octahydrophenanthrene and asym.-octahydrophenanthrene. The sym.-octahydrophenanthrene is isomerized in the presence of methylene chloride as a solvent and of aluminum chloride as a catalyst at a temperature from about -30.degree. to +5.degree. C. to sym.-octahydroanthracene. The sym.-octahydroanthracene is dehydrogenated at a chromium oxide-aluminum oxide catalyst at temperatures from about 450.degree. to 550.degree. C. to anthracene.The resulting anthracene is obtained with high yield and is very pure after a single recrystallization step.

A machine for renting articles, e.g. video cassettes, which stores individual articles in containers (26) from which they may be rented by the user and wherein an opto-electronic emitter and sensor cobination (55) is provided to sense whether an article is in a container when the latter is in its closed state, a further opto-electronic emitter and sensor combination (56) may be provided to sense whether or not a container is in its closed state, a microprocessor (61) is arranged to permit the container to remain in its closed state if the article is sensed in the container and to re-open the container if it is not so sensed, and when the container is closed a predetermined number of further times without the article being sensed, disabling action is taken.
Abstract:
A storage and dispensing device is provided for use in a tape cassette dispensing machine. The device comprises a bin with side by side sliding compartments, each slidable to extend from one bid side to expose an open compartment side for insertion or removal of a cassette. The bin is mounted by means of two tongues extending from each of the upper and lower bin sides. The tongues extend rearwardly from the upper and lower bin sides. Each tongue has an opening with a slot and a locking rod is inserted into a pair of slots.
Abstract:
A vending system which allows a customer to record a personal message on a blank video cassette tape or view and inserted prerecorded video cassette tape is disclosed. The system includes a payment detection mechanism, an activation means responsive to the payment detection mechanism, a video recording and/or viewing device and an ejection mechanism for ejecting a recorded video cassette tape. A booth surrounding the vending system is provided for customer privacy while recording or viewing a tape.

In an area accessible to browsing customers, at least one multiple-compartment display rack is provided. Each cell in the display rack removably receives an open-ended transparent plastic envelope containing a display card preferably printed with photographics, artwork and verbal indicia unique to a particular valuable article or service which is potentially available. Filed in series with the display card so as to have an end which protrudes further from the envelope mouth than the display card are a number of cards (from one to a plurality) which are tokens of units of the particular article or service, plus an additional card. Each of the first mentioned cards contains on its protruding end a consumer instruction, such as "TAKE CARD TO REGISTER", and elsewhere on its body, the title of the particular article to service. The additional card bears as its flag a consoling legend, such as "SORRY I'M RENTED". At the check-out register, the card of the first type is exchanged for the actual boxed pre-recorded video cassette or other particular article or service, and each first-type card so exchanged may be temporarily placed as a token in the inaccessible-to-customers supply area for inventory control purposes, until the rented article is returned, a restocking inventory is taken, or the like. The display rack thus acts as a more compact analog of the inaccessible supply than would a display rack of empty boxes for the articles or the like.
