Abstract:
A method and system for multiplexing a plurality of calls (135a, 135b, 135c, 135d, 135e) to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) for transmission in a plurality of timeslots (145a, 145b, 145c) by combining the calls in assigned timeslots. The timeslots may be assigned dynamically or statically. For example, calls (135a) and (135b) are combined such that call (135a) and a percentage of call (135b) are assigned timeslot (145a). The remainder of call (135b) is combined with call (135c) in the next assigned timeslot (145b). In this way n calls are combined (wherein n is a positive integer or fraction) to make efficient use of the circuit-switched connection of a PSTN Transit Network.
Abstract:
An ATM/TDM cross-connection in a digital loop carrier (DLC) network providing switching and bandwidth management facilities. TDM traffic is encapsulated in ATM cells and transported from network terminations to subscriber terminations in a digital loop via a plurality of digital loop carrier switching systems (DLCSSs). The DLCSSs are configured such that TDM traffic encapsulated in ATM cells may be transported from the network termination to the subscriber termination without having to perform TDM switching at the intermediate DLCSSs.
Abstract:
A PBX switch incorporates methods and apparatus for automatically configuring Call Appearance values in an ISDN BRI. The methods and apparatus include providing means for one PDN to call the other PDN in the same BRI, recording the Call Appearance data for the first call, placing the first call on hold and calling the same number again, recording the Call Appearance data for the second call, and repeating the process until all Call Appearance values have been recorded. According to the invention, the process is repeated for both PDNs in each BRI coupled to the PBX switch.
Abstract:
A communication system (500) includes a plurality of subscriber systems (510) coupled to a plurality of twisted pair data lines (520). Each subscriber system (510) has an availability guarantee value, which may specify a level of service for the subscriber system (510). A communication server (502) is coupled to the plurality of subscriber systems (510). The communication server (502) selectively couples a subscriber system (510), responsive to a request for service, to either a first modem pool (530) or a second modem pool (540) based on the availability guarantee value associated with the subscriber system (510). Communication server (502) can also provide a soft-termination state and dynamic network address allocation for subscriber systems (510).
Abstract:
The invention relates to a device and to a method for the packet-based access of classical ISDN/PSTN subscribers to a switching system. The convergence of packet-based networks and TDM networks leads to a situation where classical analogous and ISDN subscribers and private branch exchanges have to be accessed via packet-based transmission methods. Especially for the case of a failure of, for example, the subscriber terminals TNE or switching system-related devices or intervening communication paths, it must be made sure that substitute connections can be made and stable connections can be maintained. This problem is solved by the present invention by providing a peripheral adaptation device, integrated into the periphery of the switching system, and being suitable for the adaptation of the messages used on the interface between subscriber terminal and peripheral adaptation device, to the requirements of the plurality of peripheral devices associated with the TNE port. Furthermore, software functions are provided for treating the failure of, for example, the subscriber terminal, the one peripheral adaptation device or one of the associated periphera devices of the switching system. The interaction of said failure treatment software functions controls the substitute connection and restart of failed peripheral devices, peripheral adaptation devices and communication paths to subscriber terminals.
Abstract:
Procedure for scanning a module line or time slot in a V5 access node connected to a local exchange via a V5 interface and with a number of subscribers connected to it via a concentrating link, in which procedure a time slot in the V5 interface is scanned by transmitting by means of the part of the BCC protocol associated with the local exchange a scanning message to the part of the BCC protocol associated with the V5 access node, which latter protocol part acknowledges receipt of the scanning message. According the the present invention, before receipt of the scanning message is acknowledged, the concentrating subscriber interface is scanned to find in it a free module line or time slot for the call and the free module line or time slot is specified.
Abstract:
A line interfacing apparatus has terminating units connected to lines, a spare terminating unit, a line selector for connecting one of the lines to the spare terminating unit, and a termination controller. The termination controller has switches for switching connections between the terminating units and a switching unit of a higher apparatus. If any one of the terminating units fails, the line selector is controlled to switch the line connected to the failed terminating unit to the spare terminating unit. At the same time, the switches of the termination controller are controlled to supply signals from the spare terminating unit, instead of signals from the failed terminating unit, to the switching unit of the higher apparatus.

Abstract:
A method is provided of presenting to a user a visual representation of a frame 275 resident at a central office 20 of a telecommunications system. The method includes the steps of: accessing a database including data as to a current condition of the frame; displaying, based on the accessed data, a graphical representation of the frame 275, the graphical representation including a visual indication of the current condition of the frame 275; and allowing a user to interface with the graphical representation to effect a mapping between the frame 275 and telecommunications lines leading to and from the frame 275.
Abstract:
In a telecommunication system comprising a telephone exchange (LE), an access node (AN) connected to the telephone exchange via a standard V5 interface and a data network (DN), a procedure for setting up a direct data connection between the access node and the data network from a terminal device. According to the invention, a data network subscriber is created in the access node (AN), and when the data network subscriber starts call setup, this is not signalled to the local exchange (LE) according to the normal V5 practice. The data network subscriber's call setup request is handled locally in the access node, where also a dial tone is generated for the data network subscriber. A data connection between the data network subscriber and the data network is set up directly from the access node on the basis of the dialing given by the data network subscriber.
