A current control circuit turns on/off the switching elements in accordance with a current pattern signal in the form of an AC signal to thereby control the motor current. The current pattern signal is obtained by a current pattern calculating circuit based on a current command signal and a sinusoidal signal which determines the current phase. A flux sensing coil is installed in each phase of the motor stator, and the resulting induced voltages represent the rate of change of air gap flux in that phase. The output voltage signals are integrated, rectified and summed to obtain an average motor flux signal which is in turn applied to vary the voltage to the motor in such a manner as to maintain a substantially constant motor flux level. In this way control errors due to motor parameter changes are eliminated and the flux margin normally required in motor design is reduced to achieve a more efficient utilization of the motor.

The means comprises a motor control having a first signal means generating a torque command signal and a second signal means providing a rotor frequency signal. A stator winding energization means is coupled to the signal means for providing a stator current of a desired frequency and phase displacement to the motor. A power supply means is coupled to the stator winding energization means for regulating the magnitude of the stator current to a predetermined value responsive to the first signal means. The invention also obtains the speed control of self excited alternating current motors.
