A key-operated ignition device which prevents an engine starter from being driven while the engine is already running, so to protect the starter and engine from damage. The device comprises a key-operated rotor disposed in the device for turning a locking cam via a coupling plate to shift an ignition switch between off, on and start positions. A sliding member is selectively movable between first and second positions by a restriction plate, wherein when the sliding member is in the first position the rotor may be turned from the on position to the start position and when the member is in the second position, the rotor is prevented from again turning from the on position to the start position, without first turning to the off position. The restriction plate also prevents the rotor from being directly turned from the off position to a lock position.

An ignition switch having a starter lockout to prevent attempted restarting of a running engine. The starter lockout includes a slide-mounted orthogonally movable plunger which engages a depression formed in the switch housing upon completion of a movement of the switch rotor to the "START" position and its return to the "ON" position. Repeated movement of the switch rotor directly from the "ON" position to the "START" position is prevented by the engagement of the plunger by the depression in the housing. Disengagement of the plunger from the depression when the rotor is turned in a reverse direction from the "ON" position to the "OFF" position is made possible by a sloped camming surface on either the plunger or the depression which cooperate to urge the plunger back to a normally retracted position.

The safety device comprises elastically yieldable means connected to one of the two parts and a profile integral with the other part and constraining said elastically yieldable means to travel through two different paths depending on the direction of rotation, one of which paths has an anti-return abutment. The invention relates to a bi-stable (toggle) mechanism for a vehicle anti-theft device comprising a lever 20 pivotally mounted by a shaft 21, the said lever being subject to the action of a spring 22 and movable from one stable position through a center position to a second stable position.In the mechanism according to the invention, the said spring 22 consists of a hairpin type spring of which one end 26 is connected to one end of the said lever 20 and the other end 23 mounted so as to pivot at a fixed point 24. The distance between the ends 23,26 of the spring 22 when the lever 20 is in either stable position is greater than the distance between the ends when the lever 20 is at its center position whereby the spring becomes more compressed as the lever approaches the center position where the lever is unstable. The distance between the two ends of the hairpin spring may be less than half that length of the lever which is included between its shaft 21 and the point 24 at which the hairpin spring is located.

A key-actuable electrical switch for a key having a distal end portion including a hook and an abutment section, a central portion including key cuts defining a tumbler pin code and a proximal end shank portion. The switch includes a housing having a first portion rotatably receiving a key core including a plurality of tumbler pins, the first portion including a set of tumbler pin retraction bores housing springs for urging the tumbler pins into engagement with the tumbler pin code portion of the key. The key cooperates with the key core, tumbler pins and retraction bores to permit sliding movement of the key longitudinally of the core in the locked position and in at least one other switch actuating position. The switch includes a first pair of circuit terminals and a movable contact carrier having a first position opening a circuit between the first pair of circuit terminals and a second position closing the circuit between the first pair of circuit terminals. The switch also includes a sliding actuator mechanism actuated by longitudinal movement of the key, and a race for slidably mounting the actuator mechanism within the switch housing. A connector assembly couples the actuator mechanism to the movable contact carrier. Sliding movement of the actuator mechanism moves the contact carrier to the second position to close the circuit between the first pair of terminals.
