    摘要: Determination of the authenticity and integrity of various types of documents such as lottery tickets is accomplished by using an electronic verification machine to compare data contained in electronic circuits printed on the document to document data printed on the document. The electronic circuits are printed on the document in conductive or semiconductive ink using, for example the gravure printing process, and the presence or status of the circuits can be used to verify or authenticate the document. Data can be represented in the electronic circuits by the electrical signature of the circuit which is measured by the electronic verification machine. In the case of lottery tickets, a ticket can be validated by having the electronic verification machine determine which play spots have been removed from the ticket and comparing data on the ticket with the removed play spots to determine a play redemption value for the ticket. Document verification or lottery ticket validation can also be accomplished by transmitting signature data from the electronic circuits via the electronic verification machine to a central computer for comparison with document data.

    摘要: A system is disclosed for individually tracing units of merchandise with authentication devices or tags as such tags (with merchandise) move through channels of commerce. The total system incorporates a non-counterfeitable authenticator or verification tag which bears a machine-readable identification number and which in one form includes perforated, tear-off sections bearing the identification number and in another form is adhesively integrated with a product package. Operating with the tag, the physical system includes a central processor with a memory means that is addressable by using the tag identification number. A tag reader senses the machine-readable identification number (may also verify the tag) and addresses the memory means for registering information to specifically identify the tag and indicate batch information. As the tag (and unit of merchandise) move to commerce, the memory information is supplemented to provide a history of such movement. In subsequent operations, the memory can then be tested for meaningful information on the merchandise. As one key to using the method to procure significant data, the system incorporates apparatus for testing the content of the memory to manifest the identification of specific tags that are related as a subset of merchandise of interest.

    摘要: A method for deterring forgeries and authenticating signatures placed on any document or other object (collectively "Item") is disclosed. A first forgery-proof diffraction grating pattern or similar information bearing medium (Electronic Fingerprint or "EF") is issued to a person whose signature is being protected ("Principal") by a central registrar ("CR"). A personal identification number ("PIN") which has been assigned by the CR to the Principal is encoded on the EF. The PIN remains constant and is encoded on all EFs distributed to the Principal. In addition to the PIN, the EF contains another code ("Code") that is distinct for each EF distributed to the Principal. The Principal must acknowledge to the CR, through the use of his or her PIN, that he or she has received physical possession of the EFs before the EFs are considered valid. As the Item is transferred from one Holder to the next, a record of the transfer of the Item is kept by the CR which has the capacity to issue CAs to all subsequent Holders of the Item.

    摘要: A manufacturer's discount coupon redemption system and method provide for the automated statistical analysis of coupon shipment data characteristics in order to identify coupon shipment parametric abnormalities. Allowable ranges for preselected coupon shipment data characteristics are established and are automatically updated. Data characteristics associated with each coupon shipment are compared to the allowable ranges to identify instances of coupon shipment parametric abnormalities, that is, data characteristics that fall outside of the allowable ranges. Those coupon shipments that exhibit parametric abnormalities are segregated for further review and evaluation. The system and method utilize an operational knowledge base in which data characteristics of interest associated with a plurality of previously processed coupon shipments from a plurality of retail stores are stored and used as an information base to statistically derive the allowable ranges against which the data characteristics of new coupon shipments are compared. Periodically, at least a portion of the information stored in the operational knowledge base is replaced with data characteristics associated with more recently processed coupon shipments. Ultimately, the system and method result in a decision either to pay the submitting retail stores for their coupon shipments or to deny payment or to refer the payment decision to the involved manufacturers. In addition, the information identified and utilized in the system and method may be used to provide extensive financial and marketing information services.

    摘要: A system is disclosed for authenticating an object on the basis of certain physical phenomena or character, specifically, measurable, but not practicably duplicable random variations in the object. In one form, the object (authenticator (T)) is a paper tag having a reference space (14), the varying translucency pattern of which is a measurable but practicably unduplicable characteristic of the paper. The reference space (14) is sensed to provide reference signals indicative of the varying translucency. A reference numeral (10) is then provided from some registered form, as on the tag or in a list. If the numeral (10) is readily accessible, it likely will be cryptographically encoded. Note the value of putting encoded information on the tag to avoid the need for large reference files.For verification, freshly sensed reference signals, as from the tag (T) (actually characteristic of the tag) are compared with signals that previously were sensed as characteristic of the tag (T). Structures are disclosed as specific forms of the authenticator (T), along with apparatus for authenticator production, detection and manipulation. Different forms of tags (210) are disclosed, the measurable characteristic of which involves light transmissivity and reflectivity. Apparatus (111) for spectrographic confirmation of tag material is also disclosed. In an illustrative form of a tag (T) as an identification means, tags and processing apparatus utilize magnetic medium (218) and printed images (214). The magnetic medium is also disclosed to be recorded as for developing information on shelf life and sales channels.
