摘要: In a method and an apparatus for exchanging customer data of a franking machine, a data processing device is in communication with a first memory that is permanently connected therewith, and is also in communication with a security module for implementing security-relevant services associated with franking. The data processor stores user data in the first memory that are predetermined by a user. A second memory is connected to the data processor in a manner allowing the second memory to be readily detached. The data processor stores the user data in the second memory for data backup.

摘要: A method and system for a virtual stamp dispensing metering system is provided wherein indicia of varying values are calculated at a data center and downloaded to a mailing machine on a periodic basis. The mailing machine securely stores the indicia and dispenses the indicia as needed. At the end of the period, any unused indicia are returned to the data center, the user's account is credited, and a new set of indicia are downloaded to the mailing machine. Accordingly, the processing requirements of the meter are reduced, as there is no longer any need to generate digital signatures, an attacker is prevented from generating indicia indefinitely if the security of the meter is compromised, as the cryptographic key is not resident at the meter, and tracking requirements of the meter are reduced, as the meter alone can not be used to generate postage funds.

摘要: A method of reissuing digital tokens in an open system meter includes the steps of calculating a digital token using the predetermined postal information including addressee information, postage amount and piece count; debiting postal funds by the postage amount; issuing the digital token for generation of an indicia; storing the digital token and the predetermined postal information as part of a transaction record in a transaction record file indexed according to addressee information; determining that an indicia generated from the digital token has not been successfully printed on a mailpiece for a particular addressee; and reissuing the digital token from the transaction record in the transaction file to generate the indicia for another attempt to print the indicia on the mailpiece.

摘要: A method of reissuing secured postage indicium includes the steps of dispensing from a postage meter an original postage indicium as evidence of postage dispensed for a requested postage transaction, the original postage indicium including postage information and authentication information; storing within the postage meter a transaction record for the dispensed original postage indicium, the transaction record including the postage information and the authentication information; and receiving at the postage meter a request to reissue the original postage indicium. The inventive method further includes subsequent to receiving the reissue request the steps of obtaining the postage information and the authentication information from the transaction record; combining the obtained postage information and the authentication information with an indicator thereby creating a modified original postage indicium; and dispensing the modified original postage indicium from the postage meter so that the indicator is obtainable from the dispensed modified original postage indicium to identify that the dispensed modified original postage indicium is a reissue of the original postage indicium.

摘要: A postal system includes a local computer having a user interface and an associated storage unit for storing a secure data file that contains postal (e.g., accounting) data. A secure processing unit interfaces with the local computer and performs the secure processing normally associated with a secure postal environment. The secure processing unit can be designed to receive power from the computer to which it couples, and generally does not require special interconnect. By using the secure processing unit to perform the secure processing and the local computer to perform other postal functions (e.g., user interface), complexity is reduced which translates to faster speed of operation and a more economical hardware design.

摘要: A postage meter includes a memory including an ascending credit register to store an accumulated value of credit and an ascending tote register to store an accumulated tote value of postage charge dispensed by the postage meter in franking mail items. Accounting means of the postage meter determines whether the sum of a required postage value to be applied to a mail item and the accumulated tote value is equal to or less than the accumulated total value of credit stored in the ascending credit register and, if the sum of the required postage value and the accumulated tote value is equal to or less than the accumulated credit value, operates printing means to print a franking impression on the mail item and increments the accumulated tote value stored in the tote register by an amount equal to the required postage value.

摘要: An electronic postage meter control system having a printer for printing mixed graphic and alphanumeric information. The control system includes a programmable microprocessor in bus communication with the printer for controlling the printer and with a plurality of memory units for accounting for postage printed by the printer. The memory units include at least a first memory unit having a write access time shorter than the write access time of a second one of said memory unit, a program memory in bus communication with the programmable microprocessor having an operating program stored therein. The programmable microprocessor is able to access the operating program, an integrated circuit, the program memory, and said first and second units. The integrated circuit has an address decoding module for generating one of a plurality control signals in a unique combination in response to a respective request by the programmable microprocessor. Respective ones of the control signals are the memory write enable signals for write enabling the first or second units where write enable signals are directed to the respective memory unit. The control system further maintains the respective write enable control signals active for at least the write access time of the first memory unit in response to generation of a respective one of the write enable control signals by the address decoder. The control system further maintains the respective write enable control signal active for an additional second period such that sum period of the first period of time in combination with the second period of time is at generally equal to the write access time required by the second memory unit.
