摘要: The mailing machine and a method of initializing it are based on an unremovable program memory, which contains an initialization program. A removable authorization device is operationally connected to the mailing machine and is designed such that it can be interrogated. The interrogation is performed before and during the initialization of the mailing machine with predetermined INIT data. A security module connected to the program memory serves for checking the authorization and can prevent initialization without authorization. The initialization of the mailing machine takes place at the goods receiving location in the destination country by switching into an initialization mode, authorization of the initialization by means of the authorization device, input of initialization data and ending of the initialization and cancellation of the authorization.

摘要: A mail box has a lockable, controlled door or lid, person identifying means such as a card reader for electronic cards of type Smartcard and a key set for entering a personal code. After the mail box has received valid identifying information of a person, the door is automatically opened and a letter can be put into the mail box. In the mail box a marking means is provided that applies a marking to the letter that has been put in. The marking includes the identity of the person and information about the mail box and the time when the letter was put into the box. The mail box can also allow that registered or certified items of mail are put in and then receipts are printed. It can also allow stamping of items of mail put into the box by deducting a postage amount from a balance stored on the card and printing of a receipt for a received item and the payment made. The fact that only persons who can safely identify themselves can enter items of mail generally gives an enhanced security in handling mail. The marking on the letter also gives a possibility of tracking the sender of non-desired mail and of automatically monitoring the transport of the letter to the addressee.

摘要: A method of paying for a postage amount relating to franking a mail item addressed to a sendee by a sender, said method comprising the following operations: inputting the address of the sendee or “destination address” borne on the mail item into a handheld communications device of the sender; inputting a postage amount into the handheld communications device; generating a franking authorization code in the handheld communications device; sending said franking authorization code to a server for issuing franking authorizations; debiting the account of the sender for an amount corresponding to the postage amount of the requested franking, and having the server for issuing franking authorizations send said franking authorization code; displaying said franking authorization code on the handheld communications device; having the franking authorization code copied by the sender onto the mail item; and depositing the mail item in a mailbox.

摘要: In a method and arrangement for protecting a device against operation with unauthorized consumables a code number range for a device is allocated to a customer number in the memory of a data bank remote from the device. The consumable is aggregated with a generated code number which has a predetermined relationship to a reference code number from a group of reference code numbers that are stored in the device and lie in the aforementioned reference code number range. The allocation is stored in the data bank as a dataset with a customer number, a code number and an identification number of the consumable. In a device remote from the data center, a recognition of the need to change the consumable is recognized, whereupon a message is displayed for entering the code number, the validity and authenticity of the consumable in the device is checked on the basis of the entered code number and the reference code number range. The currently stored reference code number is then made unavailable for further use. The input of the code number can ensue via a chip card.

摘要: A distributed system (10) for issuing official stamps and/or titles (25), particularly stamps, comprising a central control unit or Service Centre (12), a plurality of local terminals (11) distributed throughout the land for materially issuing the official stamps and/or titles (25), and a plurality of smart cards (21) assigned to the operators of the local terminals (11), in which an initialisation programme (40) is provided for initialising, in combination, a given local terminal (11) and a given smart card (21) of the system (10), in order to establish between that given terminal (11) and that given smart card (21) a bi-unequivocal type relationship of correspondence and cooperation, so that the given local terminal (11) and the given smart card (21), once initialised, are enabled within the system (10) to cooperate uniquely between one another to the exclusion of all other terminals and all other smart cards. In particular, this bi-unequivocal correspondence is set up by the initialisation programme (40) by “signing” or encrypting, through a secret key (35a) of the smart card (21), a data string (24a, 24b) defined by the target terminal (11) with which the smart card (21) is intended to exclusively cooperate.

摘要: A system and method for allowing multiple postage meters to utilize removable storage media to accurately track and protect data generated during use is provided. A unique identifier is provided for each removable storage medium, and the removable storage medium is associated with a single meter. A catalog of additional meters authorized for use with the storage medium is maintained on each medium. When the storage medium is attached to a meter, the meter determines if the storage medium has been authorized for use with the meter or, if allowable, establishes a new entry in the catalog for the meter. Thus, data for a plurality of meters can be maintained on the same storage medium. Any discrepancies that exist between the data stored in the meter and the storage medium can be reconciled by the user, thereby allowing accurate maintenance of the data.

摘要: A method for controlling a postage metering system defines a first set of postage parameters associated with the generation of postage evidence in a postage metering system and then initializes the postage metering system with a subset of the first set of postage parameters. The subset defines a combination of the postage parameters for which the generation of postage evidence is not authorized. When a request for postage evidence is received, the request includes a second set of postage parameters. The generation of postage evidence is inhibited when at least one of the postage parameters in the second set matches one of the postage parameters in the first set. When none of the postage parameters in the second set matches any of the postage parameters in the first set the requested postage evidence is generated. In an alternate method the subset defines a combination of the postage parameters for which the generation of postage evidence is authorized, and the requested postage evidence is generated when each of the postage parameters in the first set matches one of the postage parameters in the second set. The generation of postage evidence is inhibited when one the postage parameters in the first set does not match any of the postage parameters in the second set.
