Abstract:
A sensing circuit (51) including a connection terminal (514) configured to couple with an electrode (32) located on a housing of a mechanical device; and a detection circuit (513) configured to couple with the connection terminal (514) to detect a distance between the electrode (32) and an external conductor or a change of the distance between the electrode and an external conductor by utilizing a capacitance between the electrode (32) and the external conductor or a change of the capacitance between the electrode (32) and the external conductor, thus obtaining an electrical signal representing the distance between the electrode (32) and the external conductor or a change of the distance between the electrode (32) and the external conductor. The sensing circuit can perform non-contact distance detection on a grounded object.

Abstract:
A dosimeter for measuring accumulated dosage of noxious gases, such as carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen, (NO.sub.x), etc., incorporates a gas-sensing electrochemical cell which utilizes an electrically biased, hydrated, solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) sensing cell. CO and other noxious gases are oxidized at the sensing electrode and the cell current is a measure of the gas concentration. The cell output current is applied to an electrically resettable current integrating device, which is basically an integrating coulometer in which metal is plated onto a working electrode in response to the cell output current. A fixed, reverse calibration current is driven through the coulometer during dosage readout to deplate the metal from the coulometer working electrode. An accurate timing device measures the time required to deplate the working electrode of the coulometer. This product of the fixed calibrating current and the time required to reset the coulometer, i.e., deplate the working electrode is a measure of the gas dosage.
Abstract:
Systems are disclosed for reading the integral stored in a coulometer by sensing the thermal properties of the electrolyte. A preferred embodiment comprises at least one temperature sensitive element and a heat source placed adjacent the coulometer positioned in such a manner with respect to each other that the heat conduction path extends through a portion of the coulometer. The thermal conductivity of the path is changed by the migration of the electrolyte into that portion of the coulometer that includes the conduction path.
Abstract:
Electric metering device including at least two coulometric cells which experience a sharp voltage rise upon deplating. The current is metered by passing current through one cell until it is deplated, whereupon the sharp voltage rise causes a second cell to become conducting. In a typical application, the cells would then be replaced and recharged for reuse.
Abstract:
An electrolytic cell including an electrolyte solution, a first electrode having a cadmium surface in contact with and electrochemically active with the electrolyte and a second electrode, which is insulated or spaced from the first electrode. The second electrode has a surface in contact with and chemically inert to the solution. The electrolyte comprises a solution of an alkali metal-cadmium-iodide complex in methyl formate. The electrolytic cell may be used as a plating cell for depositing cadmium electrolytically on the surface of the second electrode. It also may be used as a coulometer, to measure the number of coulombs deposited during plating. Accordingly the cell may be used as a timing device where the superior characteristics are needed.
Abstract:
The electrochemical elapsed time meter package of the invention includes two parts which are separable from each other and which can be reassembled in reverse position. A coulometer tube and the magnifier therefor are mounted in mutual alignment and in inseparable and fixed relation to each other on one part of the package. The scale which cooperates with the coulometer tube is mounted on the other or second part of the package and is shiftable on its carrier so that its zero point can be reset with respect to the coulometer tube.
