An automatic stability control system is provided which senses the lateral acceleration of a vehicle by way of strain gauge sensors, or the like, to provide lateral acceleration signals to an amplifier. Since strain gauge sensors which operate on the piezoelectric effect provide very weak signals, special amplifier circuits must be employed. The amplified signals control a brake assembly on the vehicle to simultaneously, continuously and gradually apply the right and left brakes with a force proportional to the lateral acceleration signals in order to eliminate swerving or swaying of the vehicle. The amplifier is mounted in the vehicle and includes a sensitivity adjustment for setting a threshold point corresponding to a minimum lateral acceleration force to which the system will respond. Sensor configurations are also used which have strain gauges to sense the regular brake fluid pressure of the vehicle in combination with the lateral force sensing sensors. Additional sensitivity adjustments are provided for the amplifiers of these configurations. The control system is primarily adapted for use in a trailing or towed vehicle in combination with a leading or towing vehicle although it is equally effective when used in a single vehicle.

A system is disclosed which senses the lateral acceleration of a vehicle to actuate an apparatus related thereto. The sensing system comprises two pendulums, one sensing lateral forces in one direction, the other sensing these forces in another direction and interconnect through associated circuitry to the braking or other system of that vehicle or an associated vehicle. Movement of either pendulum beyond a predetermined angular position as sensed by a potentiometer causes actuation of the brakes or other system of the vehicle or vehicles whose lateral acceleration is being sensed. The further the pendulum swings from its home position, the greater the amount of braking is applied. The swinging of the pendulum can also actuate a series of indicator lights on the dashboard of the vehicle. These lights will indicate the functioning of the sensing system by the actuation of green, yellow, or red lights.

A compact, air-damped accelerometer useful for aerospace applications is disclosed having a seismic mass limited to rectilinear motion along a predetermined sensing axis by symmetrical cantilever spring suspensions coupled to each end of the mass. Each cantilever suspension includes a pair of springs each having connected inner and outer ring portions. During imposition of accelerations transverse to the sensing axis, the inner portion of one spring and the outer portion of the other spring are subjected to compressive loads that are equal and opposite and therefore cancel so that no deflection error is introduced. The remaining ring portions of the springs are subjected to equal and opposite tensile loads the effects of which therefore also cancel.

A system for detecting the operation of the throttle valve of an internal combustion engine for an emission control system for internal combustion engines. The emission control system has a three-way catalyst convertor, a detector, such as an oxygen sensor for detecting the concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gases, an on-off type electromagnetic valve for correcting the air-fuel ratio of the air-fuel mixture and an electronic controller. The system comprises a transducer, such as a potentiometer and a pair of sample-and-hold circuits, in which each gate thereof is periodically operated by pulse trains for sampling and holding the output voltage of the transducer, which pulse trains have a 180 degrees phase difference with respect to each other. Both sample-and-hold circuits are connected to an operational amplifier type comparator through relay switches. The relay switches are operated in synchronism with the pulses of the pulse trains for applying the increment of the output voltage of each sample-and-hold circuit into the non-inverting input of the comparator, whereby the angular velocity and operating duration of the throttle valve is represented by a voltage.
