    Abstract: Spectrophotometric apparatus and methodology suitable for continuous and long-term use. The apparatus includes a monochromator providing pre-dispersed monochromatic light to the optical inputs of a pair of fiber optic cables and a translator for alternatively positioning the fiber optic cables at the same location with respect to the monochromator output. One of the cables conducts light to a sample under study while the other cable provides a reference for light intensity measurements. The methodology includes the steps of performing two scans through the monochromator output for each measurement on the sample. The fiber optic cables are moved between scans so that the cable employed in the latter scan occupies the former position of the cable employed in prior scan.

    Abstract: A spectrometer that provides the ability to combine the advantages of high resolution, compactness, ruggedness, and low-power consumption of Fabry-Perot (FP) tunable filter spectrometer, with the multi-channel multiplexing advantage of FT and/or grating/detector array. The key concept is to design and operate a tunable FP filter in a multiple-order condition. This filter is then followed by a “low-resolution” fixed grating, which disperses the filtered n-order signal into a preferably matched N-element detector array for parallel detection. The spectral resolution in this system is determined by the FP filter, which can be designed to have very high resolution. The N-order parallel detection scheme reduces the total integration or scan time by a factor of N to achieve the same signal to noise ratio (SNR) at the same resolution as the single channel tunable filter method. This design is also very flexible, allowing spectrometer systems with appropriate order N to thereby optimize the system performance for spectral resolution and scan integration time. In addition to the significant reduction in scan integration time, there are two other advantages to this approach. The first, because the FP tunable filter is designed and operated under n-orders, the fabrication tolerances of the FP filter cavity and operating conditions are significantly loosened.

    Abstract: In a calibration system for optical instruments of the type which make measurements at incrementally spaced wavelengths throughout a spectrum, a plurality of standard samples are measured by a master instrument and a field instrument. The measurement data obtained from each instrument are then statistically correlated to determine a calibration file which is stored with the field instrument. The calibration file includes identification on the field instrument of index locations at which the field instrument will respond to the same wavelength as corresponding index points on the master and includes correction coefficients for each of the index locations. The calibration file is stored in a computer connected to the field instrument and the computer is provided with a program to correct the measurements made by the field instrument in accordance with the stored calibration file.
