An automatic cannon, especially for cylindrical, telescoped shells, comprises a receiver in which is rotatably mounted an interconnected gun barrel and barrel extension or rotor. The rotor is connected to a power source, which may be an external source, for being driven at a relatively uniform rotational velocity for firing. A chamber having two laterally spaced apart, feed through, shell-holding cavities, is radially slidably mounted in a centrally located, transverse rotor aperture. Three cooperative camming means, responsive to rotor rotation, cause shell feeding, firing and ejection. Shell camming means simultaneously transport shells from an associated feeder into the chamber cavities and fired shell casings from the chamber cavities to a receiver ejection port. Chamber camming means cause the chamber to slide radially, while rotating, so that each of the shell holding cavities trace out a preferably cardioid-shaped path, the cavities being aligned with the barrel for shell firing at the cusp of the path so that a preselected firing dwell time of the cavities at the firing position is provided. Shells are fed into the cavities and fired casings are pushed from the cavities when the cavities are out of alignment with the barrel. Firing pin camming means operate a rotor-mounted firing pin in a manner that shells are fired as soon as they are moved by the chamber into the firing position. Preferably first and second camming means are generally symmetrical so that the gun can be operated in either rotor rotational direction, with shells being fed forwardly for one rotational direction and rearwardly for the opposite rotational direction.

Apparatuses for the infeed of cartridges predominantly of two different types of ammunition from conveying devices to a Gatling-type gun or weapon system, can be constructed such that first and second transport devices, a third device and the Gatling-type gun can be simultaneously driven if there are provided storage devices for the intermediate storage of the empty cases during reverse clearing following a firing burst. These storage devices are operatively associated with conveying devices from which the Gatling-type gun has delivered ammunition thereto by the first and second transport devices. The conveying devices, which deliver cartridges from ammunition magazines, can be selectively driven. There is prevented transport of empty cases during reverse clearing by the Gatling-type gun and there is attained the result that the Gatling-type gun is free of empty cases prior to accomplishing a new firing burst. Additionally, it is possible to fire cartridges or ammunition rounds of one type of ammunition from two ammunition magazines without the need to exchange one of the ammunition magazines.

An extensible ammunition conveyor includes telescoping conveyor sections mounting pairs of laterally spaced sprockets adjacent the conveyor section ends. A pair of endless chains are trained about these sprockets in coextensive, transversely spaced relation with each chain having transversely lapping run portions extending along the telescoped end portions of the conveyor sections. The sprockets of each pair are mounted in angularly relation to provide an effectively V-shaped open trough for transversely confining cylindrical ammunition rounds during conveyance motivated by driving the chains in unison. Jointly braking and driving the chains in an appropriate direction produces powered extension and contraction of the conveyor.

During delivery of ammunition to a firing weapon from an ammunition magazine, in which the ammunition is arranged in an endless storage and conveyor chain, high acceleration forces occur, since the entire ammunition supply in the ammunition magazine must be accelerated to the required infeed velocity in the shortest possible time. In order to maintain as small as possible these acceleration forces in the ammunition magazine, the endless storage and conveyor chain is telescopically structured according to the invention, so that not all cartridges in the ammunition magazine have to be simultaneously accelerated.

In the case of delayed firing of a cartridge or a so-called hang-fire condition in an externally powered firing weapon there must be prevented that further cartridges are fed into the firing weapon. In a known safety or monitoring apparatus of this type a deflector must be pivoted such that the infed cartridges, instead of arriving at the firing weapon, arrive at an ejection channel. The change-over of this deflector requires high acceleration forces because a great mass must be pivoted through a large pivot angle in a short period of time. In accordance with the invention the deflector comprises two segment members which are displaceable in the direction of the cartridge axes, one of which segment members selectively protrudes into the travel path of the cartridges.
