For this purpose, the rotational motion of preferably a motor (50) or the like is converted to a forward or reverse motion of the breech (20) using the Scotch yoke principle. In order to allow rest periods of the breech in the end limit positions, the rod (3) and the yoke (1) are arranged radially and displaceable relative to each other so that the yoke radius changes when the yoke (1) is rotated. A control cam (6) radially guides the rod (3).

The retention system permits all the retaining devices to be easily retracted so that a ramming mechanism of the weapon can push the round into the chamber without interference. The gun tube of the automated weapon houses the round and provides interfaces for all other components to attach. The tube length minimizes the axial movement of the round. The round is held within the tube by a front door assembly and a rear door assembly. The door assembly is made of a crescent-shaped door attached to a pivot shaft, in order to minimize the amount of rotational travel required to open the door for loading or firing the round.

A firing abort and hang fire safety system for a small or medium caliber multi-barrel automatic weapon includes a device to immobilize the revolving assembly (100) of the weapon in rotation. This device includes a shock-absorbing device mounted coaxially to the revolving unit of the weapon, a control device integral in rotation with the revolving unit and able to translate, further to the misfire of a round of ammunition or to the activation of an external control, to compress the shock-absorbing means device and absorb the rotational kinetic energy of the revolving unit of the weapon. The backspring of the shock-absorbing means device thereafter causing the revolving unit of the weapon to rotate in the opposite direction before stopping.

In order to allow rest periods of the breech in the end positions, the crank radius is defined by a control cam, which changes when the crank is rotated. The hinge pin of the crank may be externally driven via a pinion shaft. A yoke pin is arranged in a groove of the crank so as to be radially displaceable and carries the breech carrier or the breech in a groove extending transversely to the direction of fire via a sliding block. Two rollers are arranged on the crank pin and run in control cams in the weapon or crank housing. The control cam is subdivided into different sectors/sections, thereby achieving the desired motion of the breech.

In weapons in the nature of a Gatling gun the danger exists with an ignition delay or hangfire that the cartridge still is ignited after the positively reciprocated breechblock has been unlocked. However, cartridge ignition is undesired after unlocking of the breechblock. Therefore, an apparatus is present with the invention preventing unlocking of the breechblock in case of an ignition delay. Such safety apparatus may respond to (a) the gas pressure, (b) the weapon recoil, (c) the forward advance of the weapon or (d) to an expansion or bulge formed in a cartridge case, and acts to separate a breechblock head from a breechblock carrier, the breechblock head remaining in its locked position.The apparatus comprises either an inertia mass displaced relative to the breechblock due to the recoil action or a cam plate mounted at the weapon cradle and responding to the forward advance of the weapon, or a feeler pin responsive to an expansion or bulge formed in the cartridge case. The apparatus may cause a deflection of a cam follower roll from a first control cam into a second control cam, whereby the breechblock remains in its locked position.
