    Abstract: Disclosed is a fireplace which includes a firebase, a primary combustion zone with a first air supply unit, a secondary combustion zone, and an exhaust flue. The fireplace place also includes a charcoal/reduction layer which forms between the primary combustion zone and the secondary combustion zone, the arrangement and construction being such that the gases and/or particulate matter produced from the pyrolysis and/or combustion of the biomass fuel in the primary combustion zone have to pass over, or through, the charcoal/reduction layer prior to entering the secondary combustion zone and/or the exhaust flue. The fireplace also includes a second air supply unit for introducing heated secondary air into, or adjacent to, the secondary combustion zone, the arrangement and construction being such that the secondary air passes through (or adjacent to the region of) the charcoal/reduction layer to thus heat the secondary air.

    Abstract: A boiler comprising a water jacket surrounding upper and lower combustion chambers for receiving heat for heating water or other fluid therein. The upper and lower combustion chambers are defined by a refractory structure which extends entirely across the inner casing. A vertical passage through the refractory structure provides for flow of combustion gases from the upper to lower combustion chamber. Oxygen is provided through a first forced air inlet to the upper combustion chamber for burning of wood or biomass in the upper combustion chamber. Oxygen is provided through a forced air passage in the refractory structure and opening into the vertical passage thereby providing at cast one second forced air inlet to the vertical passage for burning of the combustion gases and particulates passing therethrough from the upper combustion chamber. The refractory structure sealingly engages the inner casing in a manner to seal the upper combustion chamber from the lower combustion chamber so that the upper combustion chamber can be made substantially air tight whereby the upper combustion chamber can be pressurized by forced air thereto to effect expulsion of combustion gases and particulates from the upper combustion chamber through the vertical passage for burning thereof. Refractory material in the lower combustion chamber provides refractory surface on which the burning combustion gases and particulates expelled through the vertical passage impinge.

    Abstract: A wood burning hydronic heater comprises a primary firebox into which the wood is loaded and wherein initial combustion occurs. The heater also includes a secondary combustion chamber below the primary firebox into which the combustible gases from the primary firebox are forced and into which a fresh air stream is passed to burn the gases. A primary heat exchanger downstream of the secondary combustion chamber is adapted to reduce the temperature of the exhaust exiting from the secondary combustion chamber. A catalytic combustor, located in a chamber downstream of the secondary combustion chamber and primary heat exchanger, completes combustion and reduces emissions.

    Abstract: A portable pellet fired heating element for mounting to a grill or stove and comprising a gravity fed pellet holder, a unitary tubular structure having a burner, an air intake and an exhaust chute. Fuel may be supplied to the pellet holder by various supply means such as a conveyer, ramp, scooped, held in bulk in a hopper, and like pellet supply structures and methods. Fuel is fed to the air-cooled insulated burner area onto a decomposer grate, which defines the primary combustion area and which is partially open to the atmosphere for air intake. An adjustable high-pressure flow of gas or vapor is introduced to the primary exhaust chute below the decomposer grate to create a low pressure flow above the grate and which upon ignition, cause flames to be pulled into the pellet mass on the grate. In operation, air from the primary air intake maintains hot charcoal in the primary combustion area, and the secondary combustion area provides a steady flow of wood gas that mixes with a predetermined or adjustable amount of air supplied by the secondary air intake to maintain the flame. The super heated gasses and any ash are provided to the grill or stove by means of the exhaust chute. For cleaning purposes, an electrical/mechanical device may be provided to move the decomposer grate or to provide a sudden burst of high gas pressure.
