Antifoam compositions for functional fluids contain antifoam agents comprising perfluoropolyether compounds (PFPE). An automatic transmission fluid is provided containing the antifoam composition in a lubricating base oil, along with conventional additives such as antiwear agents. Automobile transmissions are provided that contain an automatic transmission fluid containing the new antifoam compositions. In a further embodiment, methods are provided for reducing foam in an engine oil or unwanted noise in an automobile transmission during operation, comprising lubricating the engine or transmission with a lubricating fluid containing the antifoam compositions of the invention.

The lubricant mist is supplied in timed fashion to at least one nozzle (31, 36, 40, 45) associated with a lubrication station in the zone of movement of a moving part (32, 37, 41 and 34 respectively). The timed supply of the mist is effected in dependence upon the position of a drive shaft from which the moving part derives its movement. The lubricant mist can therefore be supplied to the lubrication station in an accurately dosed quantity only when it is needed there. A possible use of the lubricating method is for looms where it is particularly important that the web of cloth produced on the loom should not be soiled by lubricant.

A lubricant source (63) is arranged to supply lubricant to the reduction gear (38) to lubricate gear teeth and bearings (52) in the reduction gear (38). An annular collector (76) is positioned coaxially around the reduction gear (38) and is secured to the fan rotor (32) and is driven by the reduction gear (38). The annular collector (76) is arranged to collect lubricant leaving the reduction gear (38) on its inner surface. A number of static scoops (82) collect lubricant from adjacent the inner surface of the annular collector (76) to return the lubricant to valves (86). The valves (86) allow the lubricant to return to the lubricant source (63) in normal operation. If the lubricant source (63) fails to supply lubricant to the reduction gear (38) the valve (86) returns the lubricant to the reduction gear (38) to allow the reduction gear (38) to operate for a period of time without a supply of lubricant.

A seal carrier that is used to transmit hydraulic fluid to control pistons in a transmission includes a center passage and connecting passages to one or more oil passages. As the seal carrier rotates during operation, the seal carrier acts as a centrifuge and entrapped air in the hydraulic fluid is separated from the hydraulic fluid. The released air moves into the center passage and out through one of the connecting passages, ultimately to a tank or reservoir. A poppet valve in the hydraulic fluid drain rail maintains a positive pressure on the hydraulic fluid at all times to create a pressure differential between the central passage and the tank.
